12'8" x 18'2" Jaipur Oriental Rug | All-Over Floral Field | Hand-Knotted Wool, Made in India

This is a genuine palace-scale floor piece: 12'8" x 18'2" of hand-knotted wool in the Jaipur manner, woven on a cotton foundation with a 3/8" pile that still stands up crisp and full because the rug has never been walked on. At 152" by 218" it covers a great room or a long formal dining space wall to wall, and it belongs with the oversize 12x18 rugs that most showrooms never stock because nobody wants to move them. The drawing is classical: an all-over floral field, no central medallion, framed by a broad ivory border of scrolling vine and rosettes. Every piece we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is a hand-knotted, single-weaver-tied wool rug and not a machine-made or tufted imitation.

Design and Motifs

The field is a true all-over composition, built from large lotus palmettes set on a thin tracery of vine that runs corner to corner without a medallion to anchor it. Each palmette opens into 8 or more lobed petals outlined in cream, with a small rosette at the heart and long serrated leaves sweeping away on either side, the kind of split leaf drawing that reads at a distance across a room this size. Between the big palmettes sit smaller cusped rosettes, bud clusters and curling tendrils, so the field never goes empty even over 18 feet of length. The main border is the quiet star: an ivory ground carrying an alternating run of frontal rosettes and large curved cartouche leaves, bracketed by narrow dark guard stripes with a simple 4 petal flower repeat. Corners are resolved properly rather than cut off mid-motif, which is the first thing to check on a rug of this scale and the first thing rushed weaving gets wrong.

Color: Cream White, Ivory and Berry Red

The palette is deliberately narrow and warm. The ground is a cream white that carries a golden, faintly olive cast in raking light, the natural consequence of a soft undyed-looking wool taking a light wash, and it shifts noticeably between the daylight and lamplight photographs. Against it the drawing is worked in three voices: a deep berry red that fills petal tips, bud heads and the serrated edges of the leaves; a dark olive brown that shades the leaf bodies and the outer guard stripes; and a clean ivory that outlines the palmettes and lights up the main border ground. There is no blue and no black in the field, which is unusual and part of why the rug photographs so warm. Small touches of soft sage and pale gold appear inside the border cartouches. On a floor this large the effect is light rather than heavy, so the rug will sit under dark wood, brass and leather without dropping a big formal room into shadow.

Jaipur Weaving and Indian Craftsmanship

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the historic centers of Indian hand-knotting, and today India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is made. We say that plainly: the looms around Jaipur turn out classical floral drawing at a level of finish and consistency that is very hard to source anywhere else at this scale. The back photograph shows the story clearly, with an even knot grid, tight straight rows and no pulling or waisting along 18 feet of warp, which takes an experienced team working a wide loom for many months. The wool is full-bodied with a soft sheen at the 3/8" clip, the selvedges are firmly overcast and the ends are clean.
