8'1" x 10'1" Jaipur Rug | Black All Over Floral Design | Hand-Knotted Wool, Made in India

This is a new hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in Jaipur, in the Indian state of Rajasthan, and it is one of the cleanest black ground floral pieces we stock in this size. The pile is handspun wool on a cotton foundation, the ends finish in a tidy ivory fringe, and the back tag reads 8.1 x 10.1 with a quality grade of F. At 8'1" x 10'1" it sits right in the middle of the 8x10 rug range, which means it covers a seating group or sits under a dining table for 8 without crowding the walls. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuine hand-knotted work.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field carries an all over floral design built from large fan-shaped palmettes, curling boteh paisleys and 8 petal rosettes, all strung together on thin burgundy vines that run the full length of the rug. The drawing is mirrored across the center axis, so the pattern reads as deliberate repeat rather than scatter, and the serrated leaves between the palmettes give the field its movement. The ivory main border repeats the same vocabulary at larger scale, with broad rosettes alternating with paisleys, framed on both sides by a gold guard stripe of small quatrefoil blossoms and a fine red outline. Corners are resolved properly, with the border pattern turning the angle instead of being cut off, which is the detail to look for on traditional hand-knotted work at this price.

Black Field With Ivory, Gold and Burgundy

The ground is a true deep black, dense enough that the wool reads almost like velvet in the close photographs, and it is the reason every other color in the rug looks brighter than it would on a red or navy field. The flowers are drawn in warm gold and antique brass tones, soft apricot, dusty rose and ivory, with deep burgundy outlines and olive to sage green in the leaves. Small touches of slate blue and charcoal appear in the flower centers. The main border shifts to a light ivory and sand, with a dusty pink inner band and a clear gold outer band, so the frame lifts the whole piece away from the floor rather than disappearing into it. Expect the black to look blacker on pale stone and tile, as in these photographs, and the gold tones to warm up considerably under lamplight on a dark wood floor.

Jaipur Weaving and Quality

Jaipur has become one of the most important hand-knotting centers in the world, and India is where most of the good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made. The workshops there weave classical floral layouts on upright looms with a cotton warp and weft and a wool pile, and the better ateliers, this one included, keep the knot count high enough to hold fine outlines on a palmette without the drawing going soft. Look at the back-of-corner photograph and you can see even, straight rows and a tightly packed weave with no gaps. The wool is well spun and has a quiet sheen rather than a hard shine, the pile height is medium and the handle is substantial without being stiff. This is a brand new rug in perfect condition that will take daily traffic in a living room or dining room for decades.
