At 16' x 24'4" this is a palace-scale floor covering rather than an ordinary room rug, hand-knotted in Jaipur with a 3/8" wool pile on a cotton foundation. The drawing is classical and confident: a deep red field carrying an all-over lattice of palmettes, rosettes and scrolling vine, closed by a wide black border of ivory blossoms. A piece this large takes a loom 16 feet wide and several weavers working shoulder to shoulder for a long stretch, which is why so few of them exist and fewer still turn up brand new and never used. It ships with a certificate of authenticity, and unlike the freight surcharges most sellers add to a rug of this weight, delivery is free to all 50 states, as it is on every oversize rug we import.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field is an all-over composition, which is the right choice at this footprint because the pattern keeps working no matter how the furniture is arranged or where you stand in the room. Broad fan-shaped palmettes anchor the repeat, linked by thin scrolling arabesque vines that loop back on themselves, with 8 petal rosettes, serrated leaves and small budding sprays filling the ground between them. The repeat mirrors across the long axis, so the drawing reads balanced from either end. The wide black border alternates large cusped palmettes with upright flowering plants, and is framed inside and out by narrow ivory guard bands carrying a running vine. Close up, the outlines are drawn in fine red and rust, giving each blossom a crisp edge against the wool, the kind of finish that separates a serious hand-knotted Oriental rug from a machine-made copy of one.

A Brick Red Field Against a Black Border

The field is a warm brick red that leans toward tomato where the light catches the pile and settles into a deeper garnet in the shadow, the natural movement you get from hand-spun wool rather than a flat printed tone. Over that ground the ornament is worked in a graded family of golds: wheat, honey, antique brass and pale cream at the palmette centers, with sage green leaves and rust outlines breaking up the yellow so the pattern never reads as one solid mass. The border ground is a true black, near charcoal in raking light, and it does the heavy lifting visually, pulling the eye outward and making the red field look larger than it is. Ivory guard stripes and a slim red outer edge finish the perimeter, and the fringe is a clean natural ivory. Practically, red and black hide traffic extremely well, which matters on a rug meant to carry an entire room.

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the workshop centers that has made India the source of most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted weaving, and we say that plainly: this rug is Made in India and it is very well made. The classical floral vocabulary here comes out of the Mughal court tradition that Rajasthan workshops have carried for centuries, drawn on a full-size cartoon and knotted row by row on a cotton warp. The back photograph shows the payoff, a tight even grid of knots with the pattern legible from behind and no glue, no backing, no shortcuts. The wool is dense and springy at a 3/8" pile, heavy enough to lie dead flat at this scale and tough enough for decades of use.
