6'4" x 9'10" Nain Design Rug | Red & Ivory All-Over Floral | Hand-Knotted Wool, Made in India
This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted wool rug drawn in the Nain manner: a clear red field carrying a fine scrolling vine, framed by a wide ivory border that lifts the whole piece. It measures 6'4" x 9'10", a generous room size that still fits under a standard sofa grouping without crowding the walls, and the drawing is handled with the kind of patience you want at this price point, with every palmette and leaf closing cleanly rather than blurring into the ground. The pile is a short 3/7" wool, dense enough to hold the pattern crisp and low enough that the detail stays legible underfoot, over a cotton foundation. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a hand-knotted piece, the construction, the materials and the stated measurements.
Design and Motifs
The field is a true all-over floral design with no central medallion, built from a continuous ivory vine that branches into lotus palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, small cypress-like sprays and long curling serrated leaves. Look closely at the second and third photos and you can see how the drawing mirrors itself across the length of the rug: each palmette answers one on the opposite side of the vine, with tiny stepped grids and bud clusters filling the spaces between so the red ground never reads as empty. The border system is the signature part of the layout, with a wide ivory main band carrying alternating lattice-filled cartouches and scrolled flower heads, flanked by narrow vine guard stripes and a final slim outer line that keeps the frame tight. The 4 corners are resolved correctly, with the pattern turning rather than being cut off, which is the first thing to check on any rug worked in this style.
The Color Reading, Field to Fringe
The ground is a saturated true red, a touch cool rather than orange-leaning, and it keeps that depth across the full 9'10" length without striping. Against it the vinework is drawn in soft ivory and pale rose, so the trellis of stems reads almost pink in raking light, which is what gives the field its warmth. The flower heads are where the rest of the palette lives: sage and bottle green leaves, slate and powder blue petals, cream and oatmeal cartouches, with small rose and deep navy accents outlining the palmettes. The border is an unbroken ivory to light beige, filled with the same green, blue and brick-red details on a smaller scale, and the outer guard stripes run darker navy to hold the edge. The cotton fringe and the flat-woven kilim end finish in natural ivory, visible in the final photograph alongside the reverse of the rug. If you are shopping specifically within red and burgundy rugs, this one sits at the clean, classic end of that range rather than the dark, dusty end.
Origin and Weaving Quality
This rug was made in India, where most of the world's genuinely good contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, and it is honest village workshop weaving rather than a machine-made imitation of one. The back, shown in the last image, tells the story: small, even, tightly packed knots in straight rows, a flat supple handle, and a short clipped pile that lets the finest vine lines stay readable, which is exactly what this Nain-style drawing demands, since a loose weave cannot hold a curve like this. The ends are secured with a woven band and finished in the original cotton warps, the selvedges are wrapped firmly, and the whole piece lies flat with no buckling. Shoppers comparing it against other work in this tradition will often see it listed as an Oriental rug, and that is the right description: a traditional hand-knotted floral piece, new and unused, made to be walked on for decades.
