Design and Motifs

The field is built on a loose diamond lattice of curving vines that link large serrated palmettes, lotus blossoms and broad feathered leaves, with small 5 petal blossoms and tiny buds filling the spaces between so the ivory ground never reads as empty. Because the pattern repeats in every direction rather than radiating from a medallion, the rug can be turned or shifted under furniture without breaking the composition, which is the practical reason Oushak drawing has stayed popular for oversize rooms. The main border carries alternating palmettes and curling acanthus leaves on a paler ivory band, framed on both sides by a narrow blush guard stripe set with 8 petal rosettes, and the corners are resolved cleanly rather than cut off mid-motif. Close up, the outlines are drawn in a fine dark burgundy line that gives each flower a crisp edge against the soft ground.

The Ivory, Sage and Soft Rose Palette

Ivory is the anchor. The ground ranges from a warm cream through a lighter oyster tone depending on how light crosses the pile, a natural variation in hand-dyed wool that keeps a field this large from looking flat or printed. Over it the vines are drawn in camel and antique gold, while the palmettes alternate between sage and olive green, mushroom taupe, pale gray blue and a powdery blush rose that shows most clearly in the larger flower heads. The guard stripes pick up that same soft rose, and a deep burgundy appears only as outlining and in the small border rosettes, which is what keeps the whole rug reading as neutral from a standing distance and colorful from close range.
