This 12'2" x 18' Oushak is a true room-defining piece, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and finished with clean ivory fringe at both ends. The field is a heathered slate blue-gray that shifts subtly across the width, and the drawing floats over it in gold, sage green, soft turquoise and ivory, giving an Oriental rug that reads calm and contemporary rather than formal. At 146" x 216" it belongs in the group of genuinely oversize 12x18 rugs that are hard to find in hand-knotted quality, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the weave, materials and origin.

Design and Motifs

The layout is a classic Oushak all-over field design, built from large open palmettes, broad serrated leaves and lobed rosettes linked by thin trailing vines that barely touch one another. Nothing is crowded: the weavers left generous space between motifs, which is exactly what makes a rug this large feel light instead of heavy. Two rosette clusters anchor the center line, one in warm brown and gold, the other in green with a blush pink core, while smaller 4 petal blossoms, tulip forms and hooked sprays scatter across the rest of the ground. The main border runs a continuous procession of upright palmettes and cypress-like forms in gold, green and ivory, framed by narrow guard bands of zigzag and dart figures. Small octagon rosettes appear at intervals in the border, visible in the corner close-up, and the corner resolutions are drawn neatly rather than cut off.

A Slate Blue and Gray Palette with Gold and Green

Color is the reason this rug works. The ground is a mid-tone slate blue-gray with natural abrash, so it lifts toward silver in raking light and settles into denim gray in shade, and the back tag records the colorway simply as silver multi. Against it the palette is deliberately soft: muted antique gold and ochre in the largest palmettes, celadon and sage green in the leaves, clear sky blue and turquoise in the scrolling sprays, ivory and cream in the star rosettes, with touches of blush pink and warm walnut brown for depth. The border ground is a paler blue-gray than the field, which creates a gentle halo around the whole piece instead of a hard frame. There is no high-contrast red or black anywhere, so the rug sits easily with white oak floors, gray plaster walls, linen upholstery and brass or nickel hardware.

Woven in India in the Oushak Tradition

This rug was hand-knotted in India, where most of the world's serious contemporary hand-knotted weaving now happens, and the workshop label on the reverse records the design number 1798 along with a no child labour declaration. The knotting is even and well compacted, as the folded corner shows: rows sit straight, the pattern reads clearly from the back, and the selvages are wrapped tight so an oversize rug of this weight holds its shape. The pile is a medium-height wool with a soft handle and good luster, spun and washed to give the field its slightly heathered, gently aged look rather than a flat printed tone. Weaving a single piece at 12'2" x 18' on one loom takes a large team and many months, and the payoff is a seamless field with no repeated panels, plus wool durable enough for a busy great room.
