12' x 14'10" Oushak Rug | Slate Blue & Ivory All Over Floral | New Wool Pile, Made in India
This is a large, quiet, confident piece: a hand-knotted Oushak measuring 12' x 14'10", with a light slate gray field, a broad ivory border and an all over drawing carried in honey gold, camel and soft brown. The pile is wool on a cotton foundation, the handle is even end to end, and the rug is brand new and never used. At 144" by 178" it is genuinely a room-anchoring piece, which puts it in the same planning bracket as our other oversize Oriental rugs, where the size is the deciding factor rather than the room label. If you are still weighing terminology before you buy, our guide on what actually separates a Persian rug from an Oriental rug covers it plainly. Every rug we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity recording its size, materials, weave and origin.
Design and Motifs
The field is a true all over design with no single dominant medallion. A thin lattice of angular vine runs corner to corner and hangs three large lobed rosette forms down the vertical axis, each one filled with an 8 petal star and outlined in ivory. Flanking them are octagonal panels with cross and star centers, hooked serrated leaves, stepped diamonds and pairs of curling cloud-band arms that give the drawing its open, breathing rhythm typical of Oushak weaving. Small comb and bracket figures fill the ground between the larger elements so the field never looks empty. The wide ivory main border alternates full rosettes with fan-shaped palmettes joined by a continuous leafy vine, and it is framed on both sides by camel toned guard stripes carrying a running flower and leaf chain. The corners resolve cleanly, with the border pattern turning rather than being cut, which is a good sign of careful cartoon work at this scale.
Color Palette
The ground is a light slate gray with a distinct blue cast, the kind of soft denim-adjacent gray that reads cool in daylight and warmer under lamplight. Against it the ornament is drawn in honey gold, deeper amber, camel and a muted milk chocolate brown, with ivory used as the outlining color so every motif is separated from the field by a pale halo. The main border is a soft cream ivory, and the same slate blue returns inside the border as accent rosettes and pine-shaped figures, which ties the two zones together. A few motifs pick up sage green and a faded rose-brown, and there are touches of charcoal in the smaller star fillers. Nothing in the palette shouts. The overall contrast is deliberately low, so the rug behaves like a neutral in a room of gray, ivory, oatmeal, walnut or brass, while still supplying real pattern underfoot. The wool takes light well and the field shifts in tone as you walk around it, which is visible in the closer photographs.
Origin and Weaving Quality
The Oushak design comes out of western Anatolia, where weavers built a tradition of large-scale rugs with open drawing, generous spacing and soft muted color. This example was hand-knotted in India, which is where most of the world's serious contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced. The best Indian workshops weave to a tight, consistent standard, and it shows here in the straight selvedges, the even pile height across nearly 15 feet of length, and the way the lattice stays in register from one end of the field to the other, something that is far from automatic on a rug this large. The pile is wool, dense enough for daily traffic and finished at a medium height that keeps the outlines crisp rather than blurring them. On a cotton foundation the rug lies flat and stays square, and a piece of this weight is built to be walked on for decades rather than treated as decoration.
