At 15'9" x 25' this hand-knotted wool rug covers close to 394 square feet, a genuine palace format for great rooms, double-height living spaces and long open-plan floors that standard room sizes leave half bare. The field is a deep navy blue carrying an all-over Soltanabad drawing in cream, rust, olive and slate, framed by a navy main border and paired ivory guard stripes. Pile is 3/8" wool over a cotton foundation, the weave is 100% hand-knotted, and the rug is brand new and never used, with a certificate of authenticity confirming the materials, the weave and the country of origin. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion. Instead the navy ground carries an all-over design built on a lattice of thin vines that link large cream and slate palmettes, 8 petal rosettes in rust and brick red, cusped lotus heads and long serrated leaves that curl back on themselves. Broad red arabesque brackets sweep through the field at intervals and give the repeat its rhythm, so the eye keeps moving down the 25' length rather than settling on one point. That is the practical advantage of this drawing in a room this big: sofas, a dining table or a grand piano can sit anywhere on the rug without covering a focal motif. The navy main border repeats a large crowned palmette with a red centre and sage leafwork, and it is bracketed by ivory guard borders filled with a running vine and small scrolling animal-form devices, plus a narrow olive band of star rosettes. Corners are resolved cleanly on all 4 sides, which on a rug this long tells you the cartoon was followed carefully from start to finish.

Navy Blue Ground With Cream, Rust and Olive

The field is a dark navy blue that reads almost black in low light and opens up to a clear indigo where daylight catches the pile, which is what makes deep navy blue rugs so useful in rooms with large windows. Against it the palette is warm and varied: buttery cream and ivory in the big palmettes and outlining vines, rust orange and terracotta in the rosette centres, brick red and a deeper burgundy in the arabesque brackets and border blossoms, olive and soft sage in the leafwork, and cool slate blue and pale mint in the secondary flower heads. The guard borders shift the balance the other way, putting cream and light gold in front with small red, blue and orange figures scattered along them, so the rug is framed in light rather than closed in by more dark blue. It is a traditional colour scheme that sits comfortably with mahogany and walnut furniture, brass and antique gold, and also with modern upholstery in oatmeal, charcoal or stone.

Woven in India in the Soltanabad Tradition

This piece was made in India, which is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, and it is woven in the Soltanabad tradition of large-scale all-over floral drawing. The workshops that handle a loom this wide are a small group: the warp has to be tensioned evenly across 15'9" for months on end or the finished rug will not lie straight, and the back photograph shows a tight, even knot line with no pull or waisting at the sides.
