At 8'1" x 15'8" it is a gallery-proportioned, hand-knotted wool rug in the Soltanabad manner: a rustic orange red field carrying an all over vine and palmette drawing, wrapped in a deep indigo border. The weave is heavy and even, the pile is dense enough to stand up under a long dining table or a full seating group, and the rug has never been used. Odd lengths like this rarely turn up in hand-knotted work, which is why buyers with long living rooms, libraries and open-plan spaces search for months and find nothing. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. Instead the field runs as a true all over floral design, with slender olive vines climbing the length of the rug and branching into broad serrated leaves, fan palmettes, cupped blossoms and small 8 petal rosettes. Set along the center axis are shield-shaped cartouches: some ivory with a brown outline, some navy with a pale cream heart, spaced so the eye reads a rhythm rather than a repeat. Small birds and curling cloud-band forms are tucked between the stems, which is a detail you only catch standing over the rug. The border system is three deep: a wide indigo main band of vases, tulips and leafy scrolls, framed by narrow beige guard stripes of alternating red and gold rosettes. The corners resolve cleanly, the vase motif in the border corner sitting upright and complete rather than truncated.

A Rustic Orange Red Field Framed in Indigo

The ground is a rustic orange red, closer to terracotta and old brick than to a cherry or burgundy tone, and it shifts slightly with the light across a field this long. Against it the main border reads almost black-blue, a saturated indigo that gives the rug its weight and keeps the warm field from spreading. The drawing works in soft sage and olive green for the vines, warm gold and saffron for the palmettes, a chalky sky blue for the rosettes, cream and beige for the cartouches and guard stripes, with brown and near-black used sparingly for outlines and stems. The guard stripes are a sandy beige that acts as a bright seam between the red and the navy. Cream cotton fringe finishes both ends. It is a warm, grounded palette that sits comfortably with wood floors, leather, brass and antique furniture, and it forgives daily traffic better than a pale rug ever will.
