5'9" x 8'1" Ziegler Oriental Rug | Teal Blue & Gold All-Over Floral | Brand New Hand-Knotted Wool
This 5'9" x 8'1" Ziegler is brand new, never walked on, and hand-knotted one knot at a time in natural wool on a cotton foundation. It is the quiet kind of hand-knotted Oriental rug that works in a room where the furniture and the art are already doing the talking: a soft teal blue field, a wide sand-gold border, and drawing that reads as pattern from standing height rather than as a bold statement. The pile is clipped low and even, so the vine work stays crisp, and the back shown in the photographs is flat, tight and regular from end to end. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming it is handmade, along with its size, materials and origin.
Please Note About the Photographs:
This rug is photographed both flat under studio light and in a styled room setting. Soft, washed colors like this teal and gold shift with the light around them: the grey tile shots read cooler and bluer, while the warm interior shot reads lighter and sandier. Nothing has been altered, and the flat overhead photograph is the most accurate guide to the field and border tones.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion here. The field carries a true all-over floral design, built from a thick scrolling vine that loops corner to corner and throws off large palmettes, split leaves, 8 petal rosettes and small blossoms along the way. The scale is generous, which is the whole point of the Ziegler drawing: 3 or 4 big flower heads per width rather than a dense trellis of tiny repeats. Look at the close-ups and you can see how the vine is outlined a shade lighter than its own ground, which is what gives the pattern that softly drawn, almost faded look. The wide main border repeats a steady run of blossoms and leaf stems, flanked by narrow guard stripes of small 4 point florets, and the corners resolve cleanly rather than cutting the motif off. The ends finish in plain ivory fringe and the sides in a tidy hand-wrapped selvage.
The Teal Blue and Gold Palette
The field is a muted teal blue, closer to seafoam or duck egg than to a saturated blue, and it carries a gentle abrash that moves in soft horizontal bands across the width, the natural result of handspun wool dyed in separate lots. Against it, the vine and flower heads are a warm sand gold with pale ivory highlights, so the contrast is tonal rather than sharp. The border inverts the scheme: a broad gold ground with the floral run drawn back in the same soft teal, which frames the field without introducing a third color. Grey, bone, oatmeal and weathered wood all sit well next to it, and the blue is cool enough to settle a room with warm walls. If a restrained blue ground is the deciding factor for you, this piece belongs with the softer end of our blue Oriental rugs.
Ziegler Weaving and Origin
The Ziegler name comes from the 19th century trading house that commissioned large-scale, open floral rugs for Western drawing rooms, and the drawing style outlived the firm by well over a century. This piece is honestly made in Pakistan, where the best of that tradition is woven today: handspun wool pile knotted onto a cotton warp and weft by hand, then clipped low and washed to settle the colors. The workmanship shows in the back, which is tight and uniform with no pulling at the edges, and in the way the vine keeps its curve across a 5'9" width without wobbling. If you are weighing this against a village or workshop piece from another weaving country, our guide on Persian rugs versus Oriental rugs explains exactly what separates the categories, and why a hand-knotted Ziegler of this quality is one of the better values in the market.
