This is a big, calm, beautifully drawn Oriental rug in the Soltanabad manner, hand-knotted in Jaipur on a cotton foundation with a dense wool pile. At 9'10" x 14' it is a true room-size piece, wide enough to run under a full seating group or a 10 chair dining table with the chairs still on the wool when pulled back. The rug is brand new and has never been used, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming that it is 100% hand-knotted. The handle is substantial without being stiff, the pile clips evenly, and the selvages and kilim ends are tight and square, which is what you look for before anything else on a rug this size.

Design and Motifs

The field is an all-over composition with no central medallion, built from large lotus palmettes and radiating 8 to 12 petal rosettes linked by a slow, confident vine scroll. Between the big blossoms sit serrated saz leaves, curling split leaf tendrils and small 4 petal buds, all drawn with a clear outline so the pattern reads from standing height rather than dissolving into busyness. The layout mirrors across both axes, so the rug looks balanced from any side of the room. The main border carries an alternating rhythm of fan shaped palmettes and ivory daisy heads on a maroon ground, framed by a soft mauve-taupe guard stripe of small square blossoms and leaf brackets, with a narrow second guard on the inner edge. The close-up images show the drawing clearly: crisp color changes, no fuzzy outlines, and corners that resolve properly instead of being cut off mid-motif.

Color Palette

The ground is a warm beige that photographs as ivory cream, with a faint golden cast where the light catches the pile, and it is that pale field that makes the rug feel open rather than heavy. Against it the palmettes are worked in deep maroon and wine, soft brick and terracotta, antique gold and honey, with olive and sage green leaves giving the field its cool counterweight. Browns run from a dark walnut in the outlines to a lighter caramel in the vine. The main border is a rich maroon burgundy, deep enough to anchor the ivory field, and it is lifted by ivory daisies, gold palmette fans and green leafwork. The guard stripe introduces a dusty mauve-taupe that softens the transition from burgundy to cream. Origin and Weaving Quality

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the few places still producing hand-knotted work of this caliber in volume, and India is now where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted rugs are made. We say that plainly because the weaving supports it. The back, visible in the final photograph, shows an even, well packed knot line with the pattern reading clearly through to the foundation, which is the honest test of a hand-knotted rug. The Soltanabad drawing comes out of the classic village workshop tradition of large scale palmette and vine fields, and Jaipur weavers interpret it with slightly finer knotting and a cleaner line than the originals, using long staple wool that takes dye well and wears slowly. On a 14 foot rug the real measure of the workshop is discipline: keeping the field straight, the borders equal and the color consistent over thousands of rows. This one holds together across the full length.
