8' x 9'10" Oriental Rug | Ivory Zigler All-Over Floral | Brand New Hand-Knotted Wool
This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted wool rug in the Zigler drawing tradition, and it is the kind of piece that solves a room rather than competing with it. The ivory ground reads almost blond in daylight, the pile is crisp and unwalked, and the knotting is tight enough that the vine lines stay thin and continuous across the whole field. At 8' x 9'10" it sits squarely in the most useful footprint we sell, so if you are comparing 8x10 Oriental rugs this one gives you a classical floral statement without a dark field. Hand-knotted on a cotton foundation with a full wool pile, it ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine handmade Oriental rug rather than a machine-made reproduction.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion here. Instead the field carries a mirrored all-over floral design built on a lattice of thin scrolling vines that repeat up the length of the rug. Each repeat anchors on a large crowned palmette flanked by two long curled serrated leaves, with 8 petal rosettes, small tulip buds and tiny stars filling the open ivory between them. The drawing is symmetrical across the vertical axis, so the pattern mirrors itself left to right, and the vine work is drawn fine enough that you can follow a single stem for several feet. Three bands frame it: a narrow taupe inner stripe, a wide ivory main border carrying alternating boteh forms and lotus palmettes, and an outer taupe band with small ivory bird and blossom figures walking the perimeter. The guard stripes are outlined in slate blue, which keeps the border edges sharp against the ivory.
The Ivory, Olive and Rust Palette
The field is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached wool than to white, which is why it photographs cream in close-up and pale sand at full view. Over that ground the palmettes are worked in olive green and antique gold, the rosette centers in rust and deep burgundy, and the leaf work shifts between bronze and a soft olive brown. Slate blue appears throughout as the outline color on the vines and in the hearts of several blossoms, and there are small touches of salmon and chocolate brown in the border palmettes. Both borders sit on a taupe brown, a muted earth tone that stops the ivory from floating. The overall effect belongs with other ivory and beige Oriental rugs, light and quiet from across the room, then genuinely colorful once you are standing on it.
Made in India: Weaving and Quality
India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this rug is a clear example of why. It was knotted by hand on a vertical loom with a cotton warp and weft and a wool pile, knot by knot, with no part of the pattern printed, tufted or glued. The reverse shows an even, legible grid of knots with the design reading clearly through to the back, the selvages are tight, and the fringe is the original warp ends rather than an applied tape. The weave is dense enough to hold the fine vine drawing and the thin outline colors without blurring, which is the real test of a Zigler style field at this scale. Because it has never been on a floor, the pile stands upright at full height and the colors are exactly as they left the loom.
