8' x 10' Oriental Rug | Burgundy All Over Floral with Ivory Border | Hand-Knotted Wool, Made in India

This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in India in natural wool on a cotton foundation, and it lands in the single most requested room size we sell. The field is a deep burgundy, the wide main border is ivory, and the drawing between them is classical floral work with real discipline to it: continuous vines, open palmettes, and a pair of flower vases anchoring each end of the field. At 8' x 10' it fills a standard seating group without crowding the walls, which is why 8x10 rugs stay the default choice for formal rooms. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. Instead the weaver ran an all over floral lattice across the whole field, built from thin scrolling vines that connect large lobed palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, split acanthus leaves and small four petal buds. Two ivory flower vases sit on the vertical axis, one near each end, each filled with tiny dotted blossoms and flanked by curling leaf handles, and a pair of open wreath roundels sits to either side of the center. The ivory main border carries a repeat of big frontal rosettes and leafy palmettes joined by a thin red vine, with narrow gold guard stripes inside and out. Look at image 4 and you can follow the same vine unbroken for 3 feet, which is the mark of a cartoon drawn properly rather than patched together.

Burgundy Ground, Ivory Border, Sage Green Accents

The ground is a true burgundy, a wine red with brown depth in it rather than a bright pillar box red, and it shifts a shade or two across the field as the light catches the wool, which is normal in a hand-knotted pile and reads as movement rather than blotching. Against it the flowers are drawn in ivory, cream, soft sage green and a muted olive, with a warm gold picking out the guard bands and many of the border palmettes. Small burgundy and wine dots reappear inside the ivory border flowers, tying the two halves of the palette together. It is a warm, low contrast scheme: the ivory keeps it from going heavy, and the greens keep the red from reading pink. It sits comfortably with dark woods, brass, cream upholstery and antique furniture.

Made in India: Weave and Quality

India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this piece shows why. Every knot was tied by hand on a cotton warp, the pile is natural wool with a soft sheen visible in the rolled-back shots, and the pile height is even from end to end with clean straight edges and hand-tied cotton fringe at both ends. The back tag marks it as rug 6522. The knotting is fine enough to hold the thin vine lines and the dotted vase fill without them blurring, which is the real test on a floral design like this one, and dense enough to take steady traffic in a family room. Condition is perfect: brand new, never used, never on a floor.
