10' x 10' Square Oriental Rug | Ivory All Over Floral with Chocolate Brown Border | Wool & Silk, Made in India

A true 10' x 10' square is a shape almost nobody weaves, and this one is hand-knotted in wool with silk through the flowers, which is why the blossoms catch light while the ivory ground stays matte. The field is a classic all over floral design framed by a wide chocolate brown border, and the square format means it reads correctly from every side, which is exactly what you want under a round dining table or centered in a square great room. It has never been used, the pile is full, the ends and edges are untouched, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted piece.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion. Instead a thin vine network covers the whole ivory field, carrying large open rosettes, lotus palmettes, small 5 petal blossoms, buds and long serrated leaves that angle away from the stems. The drawing repeats in mirrored pairs, so each quarter of the square answers the one opposite it, and because the field has no top or bottom the rug can be rotated through all 4 positions without the pattern ever looking upside down. The chocolate border is drawn differently, with a bold curling arabesque and acanthus leaf scroll that swings corner to corner and resolves cleanly at each corner with a centered palmette. Narrow zigzag and sawtooth guard stripes in gold and ivory separate field from border and then finish the outer edge, and the detail photos show the fine outlining in burgundy and black that keeps every leaf tip crisp.

Color Palette: Ivory Ground, Chocolate Border, Olive and Rust Flowers

The ground is a warm ivory with a faint cream to buttermilk shift across the weave, soft rather than stark white, which keeps it easy next to oak, walnut and linen. Against it the flowers are worked in muted olive and sage green, rust and terracotta, antique gold, cocoa brown and small deep burgundy centers, with the silk picking out highlights so individual petals look lit from inside as you walk around the rug. The border is a deep chocolate brown that photographs with a faint aubergine cast where the pile leans, and its scrolling vines are drawn in pale gold and cream with the same olive and rust repeated from the field, so the two halves of the rug belong to each other. Thin lines of brick red and dark navy outline appear only in the guard stripes and leaf edges, and the fringe and outer selvage return to plain ivory.

Woven in Jaipur, India

Jaipur and the surrounding Rajasthan workshops are where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this piece shows why: a cotton foundation under a tightly packed wool and silk pile, even knotting across a full 120 inch width, and borders that stay straight rather than wandering the way looser village work does. The classical floral vocabulary here is the shared language of the whole Oriental rug tradition, interpreted by Indian weavers in a calmer, more neutral palette than the originals, and cut to a square the market rarely offers. Weaving a square of this size takes a purpose built loom and a cartoon drawn specifically for it, since nothing about the layout can be borrowed from a standard rectangle.

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
