10' x 15'6" Wool & Silk Oriental Rug | Traditional All-Over Floral | Made in India, Never Used

This is a large, quiet, formal piece: a hand-knotted wool and silk Oriental rug measuring 10' x 15'6", woven on a cotton foundation with an all-over floral field and a wide main border. It has never been used, the pile stands full at every point, and the silk drawn through the flowerheads and leaf tips catches light as you walk around it, which is exactly what you want in a rug this size. At 120" x 186" it is a true room-filler for a great room, a long formal dining room or a library, and it sits comfortably with the rest of our oversize wool and silk rugs. Design and Motifs

The field carries a classical all-over floral layout with no central medallion: a thin vine scroll runs corner to corner and hangs large lobed palmettes, cypress-shaped blossoms, split serrated leaves and small 8 petal rosettes off its curves. The drawing is mirrored across both axes, so the pattern repeats in balanced pairs up the length of the rug rather than pulling the eye to one point, which is the reason an all-over field works so well at 15'6" long. The close-up shows how each flowerhead is built from 4 or 5 separate tones with a fine dark outline, and how the little curling leaves are shaded from cream into rust so they read as three-dimensional. The main border repeats a large palmette and leaf cartouche between paired birds and buds, framed on both sides by narrow guard stripes of running vine. Corners are resolved cleanly, the border turns without breaking the rhythm, and the ivory cotton fringe at both ends is the continuation of the warps.

A Beige Field With a Soft Green Cast

Beige is the governing color, warmed toward cream in the open ground and cooled toward pale sage where the silk catches light. Against that ground the palette is deliberately restrained: antique gold and tan carry the palmettes, olive and moss green fill the large leaf forms, and rust, brick and deep burgundy appear only as small accents inside the flowerheads. Soft pink and pale blue turn up in the smaller rosettes, and black is used sparingly as an outlining color rather than a field color. The main border is a shade deeper than the field, a tan-beige with a distinct olive-brown guard stripe on either side that gives the whole rug a clean frame from across the room. Because the contrast stays low and every accent sits in the warm half of the spectrum, this rug settles into almost any scheme, from cream and walnut to gray upholstery, without fighting the room.

Woven in India: Materials and Weave Quality

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted rugs are now made, and this piece is a good example of why. The weavers work the classical floral repertoire with a fine, tight knot on a cotton foundation, then blend silk into the wool pile so the flowers, leaf tips and vine scroll lift out of the ground with a sheen the wool alone cannot give. The ruler photo shows the reverse: straight, even rows, tight and regular knotting, and no slack or unevenness where the weavers changed color. Wool takes the daily traffic, silk carries the highlights, and the result is a rug that is genuinely durable under furniture yet reads as a formal piece. Woven new and never laid down, the full pile, crisp selvedges and clean ivory fringe are all original to the loom.
