7'10" x 8'2" Square Oriental Rug | Transitional All Over Floral | Wool & Silk, Made in India

A true square is one of the hardest formats to find in a hand-knotted piece, and this 7'10" x 8'2" rug fills it with a quiet, modern reading of a classical all over floral. The pile is a blend of wool and silk, so the drawing sits in low relief: the wool ground is matte and velvety, while every vine, leaf and rosette is knotted in silk that catches light and shifts from pale ivory to soft rose depending on where you stand. It is brand new, never used, and ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug rather than a machine-made reproduction.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The wide overhead shots were taken under warm studio light and read pinker and more washed than the rug actually is. The close-up images show the true tone: a light sage green ground with ivory and soft brown silk drawing. Judge the color from the detail photos.

Design and Motifs

The field carries an all over floral lattice with no central medallion, built from scrolling vines that link 8 petal rosettes, serrated palmettes, tulip buds and small pomegranate blossoms. Because the repeat runs edge to edge, the square format never looks cut off or lopsided, and the rug can be turned 90 degrees in a room without changing how the pattern reads. The border system is layered: a narrow inner guard stripe, a broad main band of connected cartouches and curling leaf forms, and an outer row of repeating boteh-like buds that steps neatly around all 4 corners. Detail photos show how lightly the drawing is handled, with thin silk outlines rather than heavy color blocks, which is what gives the whole piece its faded, almost etched appearance and makes it read as modern and contemporary furnishing rather than traditional.

Light Sage Green, Ivory and Soft Brown

The ground is a light sage green, cool and slightly dusty, closer to celadon than to olive, and it stays even across the whole 7'10" x 8'2" surface with only the gentle abrash you expect from hand-dyed wool. Over it the floral tracery is worked in ivory and pale cream silk, warming into blush taupe and a soft walnut brown along the vine stems and through the main border. The silk is what animates the palette: viewed into the light the motifs go almost white and pearlescent, viewed with the light they settle back into mushroom and faint rose. Contrast is deliberately low, so the rug behaves like a textured neutral in a room, sitting easily with greige walls, oak and walnut furniture, linen upholstery and brass or bronze metal. The ivory cotton fringe and the pale sage selvage keep the edges quiet rather than framing the piece in a hard line.

Made in India: Weave and Quality

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, and this piece is a clear example of why. It is knotted knot by knot on a cotton foundation by weavers working from a hand-drawn cartoon, with wool for the ground and silk reserved for the pattern, a two-fiber approach that demands careful tension control so the softer silk does not pull against the wool over time. The back shows an even, tightly packed weave with crisp motif outlines, the pile is clipped low so the silk relief stands slightly above the wool, and the square shape has been held true on the loom, which is harder than it sounds at this width. The result is a durable floor rug that looks like a studio textile: new, unused, and finished to a standard that stands comparison with far more expensive wool and silk weaving.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
