5'6" x 7'6" Oriental Rug | Transitional All Over Bird and Vine Design | Wool and Silk, Made in India

This is a brand new hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in wool with silk, measuring 5'6" x 7'6" on a cotton foundation. The drawing is classical, an all over field of scrolling vine with paired birds and small flowering plants, but the palette is deliberately quiet, which is what makes it read as transitional rather than traditional. The silk is used only in the highlights, so the pattern shifts in and out of view as you walk past it, bright from one direction and almost matte from the other. Pile height is even, the fringe is clean and the rug has never been on a floor. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity recording its size, materials, weave and origin.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion. Instead the full field carries a repeating lattice of curling vines that meet at small 8 petal rosettes, with slender trees, carnation sprays and leafy palmettes filling the spaces between. Birds appear throughout the field in facing pairs, perched on the vine stems, and they are drawn with enough detail to show wing and tail, which takes a fine knot count to pull off at this scale. The field is framed by a triple border: a wide main border of alternating palmettes and flower heads, flanked by two narrow guard stripes of running vine. The layout is mirrored along both axes, so the 4 corners resolve cleanly and the pattern looks balanced from any seat in the room. Because the drawing repeats rather than centering on one point, furniture can sit anywhere on the rug without cutting off a focal motif.

Color: Soft Green-Beige Ground with Rust and Ivory

The ground is a light beige with a distinct hint of green, closer to a pale sage in daylight and closer to warm stone under lamplight. Against it the ornament is worked in rust, apricot and a soft ivory, with the silk-highlighted motifs sitting a shade lighter and glossier than the wool outlines around them. There is no hard contrast anywhere in the rug, so the overall effect is tonal, the sort of piece that settles into a room of warm woods, brass and beige and ivory upholstery rather than competing with it. The rust is the only assertive color, concentrated in the vine lines and the border flower heads, and it reads as a quiet terracotta rather than red. Note that the green cast in the ground is subtle and photographs slightly cooler than it looks in person.

Origin and Weaving Quality: Made in India

This rug was hand-knotted in India, which is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted weaving is now done. The workshops there run large looms, trained weavers and tight quality control, and they have the technical ceiling to execute curved vine work and small bird figures without the drawing going soft. You can see the standard in the close-up photos: the outlines hold their line through the curves, the silk highlights are placed knot by knot rather than blocked in, and the back shows an even, regular knot with no pull or waviness. Among modern and contemporary hand-knotted rugs, a wool and silk piece at this level of finish is the sweet spot between a classical look and a decorator palette, and at 5'6" x 7'6" it suits a seating group, a bed foot or a well-used study.
