This is a big, quiet, confident floor piece: 138 inches wide by 174 inches long of hand-knotted wool with a touch of silk, drawn as a continuous flowering field with no medallion to break it up. It belongs to the family of traditional Oriental rug designs that Indian workshops have refined for generations, and the weave here is tight enough that the drawing stays crisp even at this scale. At 11'6" x 14'6" it is genuinely a room-defining size, so it sits with our other oversized rugs rather than with standard 9x12 stock. The pile has never been walked on, the ends and sides are original and sound, and the rug ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a handmade, hand-knotted piece.

Design and Motifs

The field is an all over floral repeat built on thin scrolling vines that rise from the lower border and branch across the whole surface. The large anchor blossoms are broad palmettes with serrated outer petals, a brown or rust heart, and small navy dots ringing an ivory center, drawn at roughly 10 inches across so they read clearly from standing height. Between them sit smaller lotus heads, curling serrated leaves, half-open buds and tiny 8 petal rosettes, each one outlined in a fine red line that keeps the shapes separate against the open ground. There is no medallion and no central axis, which is exactly why a rug this large works under furniture: the pattern reads the same from every side of the room. The border system runs 3 bands, a wide main border of linked floral rosettes and leafy cartouches on rust-brown, framed by a gold-ground guard stripe of running vine on each side, with narrow red outlines separating them. The corners are resolved properly, with the main border pattern turning cleanly rather than being cut off.

A Beige Field Framed in Rust and Olive

The ground is a warm beige that leans toward camel and light gold rather than cool ivory, a color that takes lamplight well and keeps a large room from feeling cold. Against it, the flowers work through a tight autumn range: rust and brick red in the outer petals, deep brown and aubergine in the flower centers, olive and sage green in the leaves, soft gold and apricot in the half-tones, with small points of navy and teal inside the palmette hearts that keep the palette from going flat. The main border is a deeper rust-brown, almost maroon in the close-up shots, and the gold guard stripes on either side of it create a bright line that separates border from field. Where silk has been used in the leaves and petal edges, the color lifts a full shade and shifts as you move around the rug. Nothing here is loud: the strongest contrast in the whole piece is the beige field against the rust border, which is why it sits comfortably with brown leather, walnut, cream upholstery and warm stone.

Made in India: The Weaving and the Workshop

India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and the workshops around Jaipur are the reason. They kept the classical drawing traditions alive, they train weavers on full size looms for years before letting them near a piece like this, and they have the spinning and dyeing capacity to run a 14 foot 6 inch rug in consistent color from end to end. That last point matters enormously at this size: many large rugs show a visible dye break where one batch of yarn ran out, and this one does not. The back photograph shows an even, well packed knot structure on a cotton foundation, with the pattern legible from behind, which is the honest test of a hand-knotted rug. The wool is full bodied with a soft handle, blended with silk in the highlights, and the overhand selvages and hand-knotted fringes are original and undamaged.
