A jet black ground is the hardest field color to weave well, because every flower drawn on it has to carry its own light. This hand-knotted Oriental rug does exactly that: fine wool with silk highlights over a cotton foundation, an all-over Kashan floral drawing, and a wide ivory border that frames the dark field like a mat around a painting. At 8'6" x 11'6" it covers a standard room-size footprint and sits comfortably in the 9x12 area rug range for planning purposes. The piece is brand new and never used, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction, the wool and silk pile and the measurements.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion. Instead the field runs as a continuous mirrored lattice of thin brown vines that split, curl and rejoin, carrying large lobed palmettes, open lotus rosettes, cabbage roses in full bloom, small budded sprays and serrated leaves. The drawing repeats along both axes, so the pattern reads the same from either end of the room, and the scale is generous enough that individual flowers stay legible from standing height. The ivory main border alternates a dense rosette medallion, stepped and pointed like a small sunburst, with looping vine panels that hold pink, red and pale blue blossoms. Inside and outside that band sit narrow burgundy and beige guard stripes of small four petal flowers, and a plain black outer band closes the edge before the hand-tied ivory fringe.

A Jet Black Field Lit by Ivory, Sage and Burgundy

The field is a deep, even black with no abrash, which gives the floral work maximum contrast. Against it the palmettes are built in layered ivory, cream, soft peach and pale gold, with rose pink and dusty mauve in the larger blooms and small touches of grey blue that the silk picks up as the light moves. Leaves and stems run muted sage and olive green over warm brown vinework, keeping the field from looking cold. The border shifts the whole palette warm: a sandy ivory ground, tan outlines, and burgundy repeated in the guard stripes and in the hearts of the border rosettes so the red reads as a deliberate accent rather than a second field color. Black, ivory and burgundy is a formal combination that holds up against dark wood, brass and cream upholstery.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This rug was made in China, in the workshop tradition that produces classic city patterns to a high standard of finish. The Kashan format here is handled with real discipline: the vine scroll stays true across more than 11 feet of length, the border medallions turn the corners cleanly rather than being chopped off, and the pile is clipped low and level so the silk outlines sit slightly proud of the wool and catch light along the flower edges. The back shows a tight, regular knot grid on a cotton warp and weft, the selvedges are firm, and the fringe is an extension of the warp rather than an applied finish. It is a well built, densely knotted floor piece with the weight and hand you expect from serious workshop weaving.
