12' x 18'3" Jaipur Oriental Rug | Ivory Kashan All-Over Floral | Wool and Silk, Brand New

This is a full palace piece, 12' x 18'3" of hand-knotted wool and silk woven in Jaipur, and it has never been on a floor. The ivory ground carries an all-over Kashan drawing of flowering vines, and the whole field is enclosed by a deep chocolate brown main border, which is an unusual and confident choice on a rug this large. Pieces in the 12 x 18 oversize size class are made to order in only a handful of workshops, because a single loom has to stay dressed for years to finish one. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction, the wool and silk pile and the Indian origin.

Design and Motifs

The field follows the classic Kashan all-over formula: thin arcing vines that split, curl back on themselves and carry large open rosettes, lanceolate leaves, tulip heads and small 5 petal blossoms. There is no central medallion, so the pattern reads continuously in every direction, which is exactly what you want under furniture in a big room, since no single focal point gets swallowed by a sofa. The repeat is drawn in mirrored pairs along the long axis, with matched flower heads facing each other across the center line and smaller filler sprays keeping the ivory ground from ever going empty. The main border runs a heavy palmette and split leaf scroll with reversing directional vines, edged on both sides by a fine zigzag guard stripe and then an ivory outer guard carrying a row of small diamond rosettes. In the close photographs you can see the silk used selectively, outlining petals and leaf spines so that the drawing lifts off the matte wool ground as you walk past it.

The Ivory and Brown Color Story

The ground is a warm ivory that leans toward cream and light camel rather than a cold white, and it changes tone with the nap, going pale and luminous from one end and deeper honey from the other. Against it the flowers are built from a tight family of earth colors: muted sage and olive green inside the larger rosettes, soft terracotta and rust in the petal tips, cinnamon and antique gold in the vine work, with small accents of deep burgundy that read almost black at a distance. The main border is a solid coffee brown, deep and even, which frames all that pale field and gives the rug real weight on a light floor. The guard stripes bring in mushroom taupe, oxidized gold and a thin line of red that separates brown from ivory cleanly. Overall the palette is warm neutral, so it sits easily with walnut and oak furniture, brass, leather and stone, without the red that many traditional rugs force on a room.

Jaipur Weaving and Quality

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the best hand-knotting centers working today, and India is now where most of the world's serious contemporary hand-knotted production happens. This piece shows it: an even cotton foundation, a straight and square outline across more than 18 feet of length, tight selvages, and a clipped pile that keeps enough height for the silk outlines to stand proud of the wool. The back photographs show clean regular rows with no distortion at the ends, which is the real test on an Oriental rug of this scale. Among oversize hand-knotted rugs this one is unusually sound, and being brand new it still has its full original pile and full original color.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
