This is a large, formally drawn hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in Pakistan in the classic Tabriz manner, measuring 10'3" x 14'6" and finished in perfect condition. The pile is wool with silk on the highlights, which is why the ivory vinework and the medallion catch light differently from the matte navy ground around them. At 123" x 174" it is a true room-size piece for a great room, a long dining room or a library, and it belongs in the same conversation as other oversize hand-knotted rugs that anchor an entire floor plan. Design and Motifs

The layout is the textbook Tabriz formula: a single round medallion set dead center on a continuous field of scrolling vine, with the vinework carrying straight past the medallion rather than stopping at it, so the whole surface reads as one all-over floral design. The medallion is built in rings, a small central rosette, then a band of paired blossoms and curling leaves, then a serrated red outline with pointed lobes at 4 corners and pendants running up and down the long axis. Across the field are large palmettes, cypress-like leaf sprays, 8 petal rosettes and small buds, all connected by a fine ivory tendril that never breaks. The main border repeats big turtle palmettes and rosettes on a red ground between narrow guard stripes, and the corners are resolved cleanly, which is the first thing to check on any medallion rug this size. The drawing is curvilinear throughout, with no angular shortcuts, and the fringe at both ends is full and even.

A Navy Field Framed in Deep Red

The field is a very deep navy blue that reads almost black from across the room and opens up to true blue under lamplight or in daylight at the edges of the rug. Against it, the vine system is worked in ivory and soft cream, with the flower heads picked out in tomato red, rose, brick, celadon green, teal and small touches of gold. The medallion is the brightest passage in the rug: an ivory and pale green center, a soft sage ring carrying multicolored blossoms, and a strong red serrated outline that pulls the eye straight to the middle. The main border switches the balance completely, a warm deep red ground with ivory, green and blue florals, so the rug frames itself in red and holds the navy inside. The inner and outer guard stripes run pale celadon and ivory, giving a light line between the dark field and the red border. Hand-Knotted in Pakistan in the Tabriz Tradition

Pakistan's weaving workshops have spent decades producing curvilinear medallion designs to a high standard, and this rug is a good example of what that tradition does well: a tight, even knot on a cotton foundation, clean selvages and a back where the pattern reads as sharply as the front, which is the honest test of knot density. The silk in the highlight areas is used the way a workshop uses it, on the vine and the medallion detail rather than everywhere, so it adds sheen and definition without softening the wearing surface. The pile is clipped low enough for the fine drawing to hold, and the wool has the elasticity that keeps a rug this large lying flat under furniture.
