8'10" x 11'9" Agra Oriental Rug | All-Over Floral Vines | Hand-Knotted Wool, Made in India

This is a full room-size Agra design, hand-knotted in India in fine wool on a cotton foundation, with a 3/8" pile that still stands crisp and upright because the rug has never been used. The drawing is the classic Agra formula: a deep red field carrying an uninterrupted lattice of leafy vines, palmettes and open rosettes, held inside a navy-black border and a pair of pale guard stripes. At roughly a 9x12 footprint it covers a standard living room or seats a 8 chair dining table with the chairs pulled back, and it is one of the most usable proportions we stock in 9x12 area rugs. Design and Motifs

The field is a true all-over floral design with no central medallion, so the eye travels rather than settles, which is exactly why this layout takes furniture so well. Scrolling vines run corner to corner carrying large sunflower-like rosettes, half-open lotus heads, curling serrated leaves and small tulip forms, each outlined in a fine ivory contour line that lifts the motif off the red ground. The main border reverses the scheme: a dark ground filled with big palmettes and paired leaves, punctuated at intervals by an upright shield-shaped blossom at the center of each repeat, with the 4 corners resolved cleanly rather than cut off mid-motif, which is the mark of a properly drawn cartoon. Two narrow guard stripes of trailing flowerheads separate field from border, and the outer edge finishes in a red selvage and an ivory cotton fringe.

Red Field, Navy-Black Border, Gold and Sage Accents

The ground is a warm brick red that leans slightly toward burgundy in the pile detail photos and reads brighter under direct light, with the wool's natural abrash giving the surface movement instead of a flat printed look. Against it, the floral work is worked in ivory, straw gold, soft honey and a muted sage to olive green, with occasional apricot and pale rose touches in the smaller flowerheads. The main border is listed as black and photographs as a very deep blue-black navy, dense enough to frame the red firmly, while the guard stripes are a light celadon and cream that keep the transition soft. It is a red and navy room rug at heart, and it sits comfortably with dark hardwood, walnut and cherry furniture, brass and warm brushed metals, and cream or stone painted walls.

The Agra Tradition and Indian Weaving Quality

Agra gave its name to one of the great court weaving traditions, the Mughal workshops that produced large-scale floral field rugs for palace rooms, and the design vocabulary here comes straight out of that lineage.
