8'9" x 11'8" Agra Design Oriental Rug | All Over Floral Vine | Brown & Ivory | Made in India

This 8'9" x 11'8" rug is hand-knotted in India in the Agra tradition, with a 100% wool pile worked on a cotton foundation and a clean, unwashed-out finish that photographs exactly as it looks on the floor. It is a true Oriental rug in the classical sense: every knot tied by hand, a soft spun wool that takes a quiet sheen under lamplight, and a drawing style borrowed from the old Agra workshop repertoire. The back label photographed in the gallery confirms the weave as hand knotted in India with a 100% wool pile, and the rug ships with our certificate of authenticity. At roughly room-filling scale it sits squarely in the 9x12 rugs bracket, the single most useful footprint for a main seating area.

Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic all over floral design built on thin scrolling vines that travel the full length of the rug without a dominant central medallion. Instead, a single small ivory lozenge holding a 4 part cross rosette marks the center, with blossoming palmettes, open daisy heads, curling serrated leaves and tiny 4 petal buds strung along the vine work above and below it. Note the pair of large acanthus-style leaf scrolls that anchor the lower field and repeat at the top, a detail of the drawing that gives the layout direction. A wide ivory main border frames everything with linked shield cartouches and palmettes separated by small square cross rosettes, and it is flanked by narrow guard stripes of running meander and rosettes, the outermost one edged in the same deep brown as the field.

A Soft Brown Field With Ivory and Sage Green

The ground is an unusual brown, cooler and dustier than a chocolate, reading with a plum or aubergine undertone in the detail photos and shifting with the light as the wool catches it. Fine vertical abrash striations run through that field, the mark of small hand-dyed wool lots, and they keep a large expanse of color alive rather than flat. Against it the palette is deliberately soft: cream and ivory blossoms, sage and olive green leaves, muted old gold, pale slate blue and small sparks of rust red and terracotta in the border rosettes. The ivory border lifts the whole piece and keeps the brown field from closing the room down, which is what makes this one of the easier brown Oriental rugs to live with alongside warm woods, natural linen and stone.

Agra Design, Woven in India

Agra was one of the great Mughal weaving centers, and the city's name still travels with this vocabulary of flowing vine, palmette and cartouche border. This piece is honestly and openly made in India, which is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted weaving now happens: trained workshop weavers, good highland wool, properly plied cotton warps and a level, even beat across more than 100 inches of width. You can see that discipline in the photographs, where the border lines stay straight, the corners resolve cleanly on all 4 sides, and the pile is clipped at a medium height that shows the drawing without sacrificing underfoot weight. Among current Oriental rugs in this size and price class, that combination of handspun-looking wool, restrained color and correct traditional drawing is what separates a workshop piece from a production one.

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
