Design and Motifs

There is no closed medallion here. Instead the weaver used a mirrored all-over floral layout that gathers toward a loose rosette at the center and then repeats outward in every direction, so the pattern reads continuously no matter where furniture lands. Curling serrated leaves, split palmettes, budding vine scrolls and small 8 petal rosettes fill the ground, with fine tendrils linking one cluster to the next. The main border carries large fan palmettes alternating with paisley boteh and small leafy sprays, framed by narrow guard stripes of rosettes, teardrops and a black zigzag band that does the job of a saw-tooth reciprocal. The corner resolutions are properly drawn rather than cut off mid-motif, which is the first thing to check on a rug in this idiom and a good indication of how carefully the cartoon was followed.

A Black Field Against Beige, Olive and Rust

Black is the dominant color and it is a true deep black, not a very dark navy or charcoal, so the field reads almost as negative space and every motif sitting on it gains contrast.
