This is a new, never used Ziegler woven in fine Ghazni wool, and it is the kind of Oriental rug that reads as an antique from across the room and as a brand new weave the moment you kneel down and touch it. The field is a deep charcoal black carrying a full all-over vine, and the wide light tan border cools the whole thing down so the piece never feels heavy. At 8'11" x 11'5" it lands squarely in the practical 9x12 room size, wide enough to sit under a sofa group with all four legs on the wool or under a 8 seat table with chairs pulled back. Design and Motifs

The drawing is a classic Ziegler reading of the old Sultanabad workshop style: a continuous all over floral design with no central medallion, so the pattern runs straight off the edges of the field and keeps working no matter how you turn the rug or where you place the furniture. Large serrated palmettes and open 8 petal rosettes are strung on a thin ivory vine that loops into a soft diamond lattice, with broad maple shaped leaves, small paired cloud bands and tiny budded stems filling the gaps. The repeat is mirrored down the length, so you get 2 columns of the same big palmette answering each other across the center line. The main border carries a slow rhythm of black sickle leaves and pale rosettes on tan, flanked by 2 narrow guard stripes of small crosses and star flowers, and the outer edge closes in the same dark tone as the field so the border is framed on both sides.

Color Palette: Charcoal Black, Beige and Sage Green

The ground is a dense charcoal black that breaks toward a smoky green-black where the light crosses the pile, exactly the kind of gentle movement you only get from handspun wool taking dye at slightly different rates. Against it the ornament sits in a warm beige that runs from apricot at the palmette centers to pale gold at the tips, with soft sage green shading the larger leaves and an occasional dusty rose flicker in the small blossoms. The border is a light tan that photographs almost sand colored, quietly washed with peach along the inner stripe, and the black sickle leaves on it pick the field color back up so the two halves of the rug speak to each other. The Ziegler style takes its name from the 19th century European firm that commissioned softly drawn, open field room rugs for Western houses, and the best modern examples of that tradition are woven today in the workshops of Pakistan. This one is hand-knotted on a cotton foundation using fine Ghazni wool, a long staple, high lanolin fleece prized for its natural sheen and for how well it holds vegetable dye, which is why the beige tones glow rather than sit flat. The knotting is even and tight enough to draw the curved vine cleanly, the back shows a crisp, regular grid with no pulled rows, and the selvages and ends are finished by hand. Underfoot the pile feels substantial and slightly waxy in the way good Ghazni wool always does, and that combination of dense knotting and durable fleece is what lets a rug this size take daily traffic for decades.
