11'4" x 14'7" Ziegler Oriental Rug | Rust, Teal and Gold All-Over Floral | Fine Soft Ghazni Wool

This is a large, quiet, confident floor piece: an Oriental rug in the Ziegler manner, hand-knotted in fine soft Ghazni wool on a cotton foundation and measuring 11'4" x 14'7". The drawing is open and large in scale, the palette is sun-warmed rust against teal, and the wool has the loose, silky handle that shows up in the fold photographs. At this footprint it belongs with our oversized rugs, covering a full seating group or a long dining table without crowding the walls. The rug is in perfect condition, never used, and ships with a certificate of authenticity documenting the weave, the materials and the measurements.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The field carries an all-over floral design built from broad palmettes, serrated leaves, cypress-like sprays and curling vines that run corner to corner, so the composition reads the same from every seat in the room and tolerates furniture sitting on top of it. The motifs are drawn large and slightly loose, spaced so the field breathes rather than filling every inch. Around it runs a wide main border of linked rosettes and turtle palmettes on a teal ground, separated from the field by a gold vine stripe and finished outside with a pair of narrow guard stripes carrying small stars and leaf tips. The corners resolve cleanly, which on a rug this wide is a fair measure of how carefully the cartoon was followed.

The Rust, Teal and Gold Palette

The field is rust, but it is not one flat rust. It moves from terracotta through salmon and apricot in soft horizontal bands, the abrash that comes from hand-dyed, hand-spun yarn, and in the close-up photograph you can see those bands drifting across the ground. Sitting on that warm base are motifs in antique gold, camel and cream, with teal and pale sea green used for blossom centers and leaf tips so the cool color is scattered through the field rather than concentrated. The main border reverses the relationship: a deep teal to blue-green ground with rust, gold and ivory flowers on it, which is what gives the rug its frame and keeps the warm field from spreading. The outer edge returns to a soft salmon rust, and ivory cotton fringe finishes both ends.

Ziegler Weaving and Ghazni Wool Quality

The Ziegler name comes from the 19th century trading house that commissioned open, large-scale floral room-size weavings for European drawing rooms, and the style has been kept alive by the Pakistani workshops that now produce most of the world's good hand-knotted Ziegler work. This one is knotted on a cotton warp and weft with Ghazni highland wool, a long-staple fleece prized for its natural luster and for the way it takes dye unevenly enough to give life to a plain field. The back photograph shows an even, well-packed knot with the pattern reading clearly through, and the fold shot shows a supple rug with no stiffness, so a piece of this size lies flat and rolls without fighting you. Nothing about it is machine-assisted: warp, knot, weft, shear and wash were all done by hand.
