9' x 11'4" Zigler Chobi Oriental Rug | Brown & Gold All Over Floral | Brand New
Brand new and never used, this 9' x 11'4" Zigler Chobi is the quiet, earthy kind of Oriental rug that works in a room without taking it over. The pile is natural handspun wool on a cotton foundation, clipped low so the drawing stays crisp, and the whole piece carries that softly washed, already-lived-in surface the Chobi weave is bought for. At 108" by 136" it sits just under a standard 9x12 rug footprint, which makes it an easy fit under a seating group or a dining table in a room that cannot quite take a full 12 foot length. Every rug we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted.
Design and Motifs
The field carries a large-scale all over floral design rather than a central medallion, built from broad lotus palmettes and fan-shaped blossoms linked by thick scrolling vines and serrated acanthus leaves. The scale is generous: the biggest palmettes measure close to a foot across, which is the signature of Ziegler drawing and the reason the pattern still reads clearly from across a room or with furniture sitting on it. Smaller rosettes, buds and curled leaf tips fill the ground between them, and the drawing stays loose and hand-drawn rather than mechanically repeated, so no two quadrants line up exactly. A single wide main border runs around all 4 sides with its own vine of rosettes and shield-shaped cartouches, framed inside and out by narrow reciprocal guard stripes in a slightly deeper tone.
A Warm Brown, Beige and Gold Palette
The field is a warm chocolate brown with a faint aubergine cast, deepest in the open ground and lifting to a dusty cocoa where the handspun yarn takes the dye unevenly, which gives the surface a gentle abrash movement instead of a flat printed look. Against it the palmettes are drawn in soft beige, wheat and pale ivory, several of them shaded with a thin wash of gold at the petal edges. The border swings the other way, a broad apricot gold ground that reads honey in daylight and sand under lamplight, with motifs picked out in brown, soft celadon green and the occasional small touch of terracotta. The outer selvage and the narrow framing line are a dark brown that holds the whole thing together. If you are furnishing around walnut, leather, cream linen or natural stone, this is exactly the kind of brown and gold area rug that lets everything else in the room stay where it is.
Woven in Pakistan: the Chobi Weave
Made in Pakistan, where the Zigler Chobi weave has been refined for decades into one of the most reliable sources of good new hand-knotted Oriental rugs. Chobi takes its name from the wood-toned natural dyes used for the palette, and the method is the old one: wool spun by hand so the yarn varies slightly in thickness, dyed in small lots, knotted on a cotton warp and then washed to settle the colors into that muted, time-softened tone. The back photograph shows an even, well-packed knot line with no slack or puckering, the fringes are the warps themselves rather than a sewn-on addition, and the selvages are tightly overcast in dark brown. The handle is supple enough to roll easily yet substantial underfoot, a rug built for a main room and expected to be walked on for generations.
