9' x 12' Zigler Oriental Rug | Black Field with Ivory Border | All-Over Floral | Brand New

A black ground is the hardest field color to pull off in a hand-knotted rug, because every flower drawn on top of it has to carry its own light. This 9' x 12' piece does it with a dense, slightly blue-black field, an ivory main border and a sage green guard stripe on each side. It is brand new and never used, with a 3/8" wool pile that still has the full spring of an unwalked rug, a cotton foundation, and hand-tied fringes at both ends. Among room-size Oriental rug options this is the one that anchors a pale room instead of disappearing into it, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted.

Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic Zigler composition: a continuous lattice of thin burgundy vines that loop across the black ground and feed large open palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, serrated acanthus leaves and tall flame-shaped cones that stand on the center line. Nothing is crowded. The drawing leaves real black breathing space between each element, which is what separates a good all-over floral design from a busy one. The ivory main border runs an alternating rhythm of ruby-outlined star rosettes and paired leaf cartouches linked by a faint scrolling line, with narrow sage green guard bands carrying a tiny repeating vine above and below. The 4 corners resolve cleanly, a detail worth checking on any large rug since that is where a weaver either plans the pattern or fudges it.

Color: Black, Ivory, Sage and Burgundy

The field is a deep saturated black that photographs with a faint navy undertone in raking light and reads as true black underfoot. Against it the florals are worked in a soft, slightly muted palette: warm ivory and buttery cream in the larger palmettes, pale sage and olive green in the leaves and rosette centers, apricot and rust in the smaller blossoms, with a touch of gold and pale lilac scattered through the smallest flower heads. The vine tracery is a thin oxidized burgundy that keeps the whole field visually stitched together. The main border shifts the balance completely, a warm sandy ivory ground with dark burgundy outlines and sage green fills, so the rug frames itself in light and holds the dark center in the middle of the room. It is a palette that sits comfortably with cream walls, walnut furniture, brass, and black metal window frames.

Weaving Quality and Origin

This rug was made in India, which is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted weaving is now done, and there is no reason to apologize for that. The Zigler style takes its name from the 19th century Ziegler and Company trading house, whose large-scale floral lattice designs were drawn specifically for Western rooms, and Indian workshops have kept that tradition alive with hand-spun wool, measured knotting and restrained color. The handle here is firm but supple, the back is even, the selvedges are tight and the wool has the dry luster that comes from a good fleece rather than a chemical wash. At 108" x 144" it is a true room-size piece, and buyers comparing 9x12 Oriental rugs will find few dark-ground examples drawn with this much restraint.
