Design and Motifs

The Zigler drawing is a large-scale, relaxed reading of the classic Sultanabad and Mahal vocabulary, and it is one of the few traditional patterns that genuinely holds up at 9 by 18. There is no central medallion. Instead the ivory ground is filled with a repeating all-over pattern of outlined burgundy hexagonal cartouches, each one enclosing a pair of lotus blossoms, alternating with squared-off diamond medallions filled with stepped stars and small rosettes. Long serrated acanthus leaves in brown and olive sweep diagonally between them, and slender vine scrolls carry palmettes, eight-petal rosettes and small carnations along the vertical axis. The burgundy main border runs a continuous ivory vine with large palmettes and pinwheel rosettes, framed on both sides by narrow sand-colored guard stripes of paired leaves and buds. Because the repeat is generous rather than crowded, furniture can sit on this rug without burying the drawing.

A Detailed Look at the Color Palette

The field is a warm ivory that shifts toward cream and soft oatmeal depending on where the light falls, and it is the reason the rug reads light and open in a big room.
