9' x 12' Indian Zigler Oriental Rug | Taupe Field, Olive Green Border | New, Never Used

This 9' x 12' Zigler rug was hand-knotted in India in wool on a cotton foundation, and it has never been laid in a home. The field is a quiet taupe that reads camel under daylight and warms toward honey under lamplight, carried edge to edge by an all-over floral vine and framed by a deep olive green main border. The drawing is soft rather than crisp, which is the point of the Zigler style: a large repeat with no busy center, meant to sit under furniture without fighting it. At 9 feet by 12 feet this is the classic full seating group format, and 9x12 Oriental rugs remain the single most requested size we stock. It ships with a certificate of authenticity recording the weave, the materials and the country of origin.

Design and Motifs

The field runs as a continuous lattice of scrolling vine, with broad serrated palmettes, open rosettes and long lanceolate leaves repeating on a mirrored axis. Look closely at the center and there is a small gold and sage rosette medallion that only reads when you stand over it, surrounded by paired blossoms and slender stems that branch out toward the 4 corners. The main border is the strongest element in the composition: large quatrefoil blossoms and rounded palmettes alternate along the olive ground, linked by a thick vine that turns back on itself at each corner. Two ivory guard stripes, each carrying a tiny meandering flower head repeat, separate the border from the field and give the outer edge its clean, drawn finish. Nothing in the pattern is aggressive, and that restraint is what lets a rug this large disappear into a room.

A Taupe Field Against Olive and Gold

The palette is entirely earth toned. The ground is a mid taupe with a faint pink undertone, moving between sand and camel across the width as the wool catches light, which is normal in a hand-knotted pile and gives the surface its depth. Over it the flowers are worked in antique gold, wheat, buttery ivory and two greens: a dusty sage in the leaves and a deeper moss in the outlines. The main border is a saturated olive green, the darkest value in the rug, softened by tan and cream blossoms. Scattered through both field and border are pinpricks of burgundy and dusty rose at the flower centers, plus warm brown in the vine work, and those small accents are what keep the neutrals from going flat. Against pale walls the rug reads as a warm greige; against wood floors and cream upholstery the olive comes forward.

Made in India: Weave and Quality

India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this piece shows why: an even knot count across 12 feet of length, straight sides, flat lying corners and a wool pile clipped low enough to hold the fine vine work without blurring it. The back, visible in the fold shot, shows tight rows on a cotton warp and weft with the pattern legible knot by knot, the mark of a workshop weave rather than a loose commercial one. The wool has a natural sheen and takes the muted dye palette well, and the finishing, hand-sewn selvages and hand-knotted fringe, is done to the same standard as the field. If you are weighing this against other traditional handmade work, our guide to what separates a Persian rug from a broader Oriental rug explains the distinction plainly.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
