This is a big, quiet, genuinely useful rug. At 13 feet by 17 feet 5 inches it covers a full great room or a long formal dining space, and it does it in a palette so soft that the room reads larger rather than busier: a muted green field, a wide camel gold border, and only the faintest sparks of rust to keep the drawing awake. It is hand-knotted knot by knot in natural hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, never used, and it belongs with the genuinely oversize hand-knotted rugs that most showrooms simply cannot stock. Design and Motifs

The drawing is classic Zigler: an open, unhurried all over pattern of scrolling vines, split palmettes, serrated leaves and small rosettes spread evenly across the field with no central medallion to anchor the eye. Because the repeat is loose and the scale is large, the pattern never crowds; you can place a dining table or two facing sofas over it and the design still reads. The border system runs three deep, a wide camel main band carrying crescent leaves, star rosettes and slender flowering stems, framed by narrow guard stripes picked out in rust outline. The corners are resolved cleanly rather than cut off mid-motif, which is the small detail that separates a carefully cartooned rug from a hurried one.

A Soft Green and Camel Gold Palette

The field is a pale sage green with a natural abrash, the gentle horizontal variation that comes from hand-spun yarn taking dye at slightly different rates, so the ground shifts between celadon and a dusty olive as light moves across the room. Over it the ornament is drawn in wheat gold, pale camel and warm honey, with cool blue-grey leaves and soft brown stems giving the pattern just enough depth. The border warms to a fuller camel gold, and small touches of rust, no more than a flower head or a curling outline at a time, provide the only true accent colour. The overall effect is neutral and low contrast, which is exactly why this size works so well: nothing in the palette fights the furniture, the wall colour or the woodwork.

Peshawar is one of the great modern centres for this kind of work, and the Chobi Zigler tradition there revives the softened, vegetable-toned Ziegler style with hand-spun wool, hand-carded yarn and dye recipes chosen for how they mellow rather than how bright they start. This piece is a firm, even weave: the back shows crisp knot definition and straight rows, the pile is cut at a medium height that lets the drawing stay legible, and the selvages and fringe are finished by hand. It is an Oriental rug in the truest sense of the term, hand-knotted on a loom by weavers working a full cartoon, and at this scale a single rug of this kind takes a team many months to finish.
