8'9" x 11'4" Ziegler Chobi Peshawar Rug | Burgundy Field with Gold Vine Border | Silky Ghazni Wool, Never Used
This is a brand new, hand-knotted Ziegler Chobi woven in Peshawar, and it is the kind of piece that reads as old furniture rather than new decor. The burgundy field carries a soft, hand-dyed striation that shifts as you walk past it, and the gold border has the low sheen that only comes from hand-spun Ghazni wool. At 8'9" x 11'4" it sits squarely in the most useful room size we sell, and it is a strong candidate for buyers shopping 8x11 area rugs who want a traditional floor without the weight of a dark, formal antique. As with every hand-knotted Oriental rug we import, it ships with a certificate of authenticity that records the weave, materials and origin.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is a classic Ziegler layout: a continuous all over floral design with no central medallion, so the pattern reads the same from every side of the room and forgives furniture placement. Broad 8 and 10 petal palmettes sit at measured intervals across the field, connected by thin sage vines that curl into small buds, serrated leaves and half-open blossoms. The scale is generous rather than busy, which is what keeps the burgundy ground visible and gives the rug its calm. The wide main border runs a procession of scrolling arabesques, cloud bands and cartouche-like floral heads, edged on both sides by narrow guard stripes of 4 petal rosettes. The corners resolve cleanly, a detail visible in the close-up photographs, and the outer edge finishes in a solid burgundy selvage that frames the whole composition.
Burgundy, Gold and Sage: the Color Story
The field is a deep burgundy that leans toward wine and raspberry in strong light, with a gentle abrash running horizontally through the pile. That tonal variation is the signature of small-batch dyeing and hand-spun yarn, not wear or fading. Against it, the palmettes are worked in a warm gold that ranges from pale straw at the petal tips to honey and apricot at the centers, with several blossoms cored in teal blue or deep indigo for contrast. The vinework is sage green, dusty and soft, which cools the composition and stops the red and gold from turning brassy. The main border shifts to a lighter camel gold, so the rug frames itself in a pale halo, and rust red outlines, ivory highlights and small teal florets keep the border lively at close range. It is a warm palette that works with cream walls, walnut and cherry wood, brass fittings and leather.
Peshawar Weaving and Ghazni Wool
Peshawar is the center of the Chobi and Ziegler trade, where master weavers work on cotton warps at a knot count high enough to hold the fine curved vinework you see here without the drawing going blocky. The pile is Ghazni wool, taken from highland sheep whose fleece is unusually long-stapled and oily, which is why the surface has a quiet silky luster and why the color sits deep in the fiber instead of on top of it. The back, shown folded in the photographs, is even and tightly packed with crisp knot definition and straight rows, and the handle is supple rather than stiff. Hand-spun yarn and small-batch dyeing mean this rug will burnish rather than dull with use, the same way the best village weaving has always aged.
