Black grounds are uncommon in hand-knotted work at this scale, and this 10' x 14' Chobi Peshawar Ziegler rug uses one to full effect. The ink-dark field is covered edge to edge with blossoming vines, and the wide ivory main border lifts the whole piece so it reads light rather than heavy in a room. The pile is a generous 5/16" of wool over a cotton foundation, with the soft sheen and slightly waxy handle you can see clearly in the close-up photographs. It has never been used and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Among room-filling 10 x 14 hand-knotted rugs, this one covers a great deal of floor while still behaving like a formal piece.

Design and Motifs

The field is a true all-over floral design with no central medallion: pale vine stems climb in mirrored columns and carry large open rosettes, serrated lotus palmettes, small tulip heads and curled acanthus leaves. Paired leaf forms in sage green sit at the top and bottom of the field like quiet anchors, and a single small cartouche-shaped rosette marks the visual center. The border system is unusually deep for this design, running 5 bands in total: a broad ivory main border filled with detached flower heads and slender stems, a sage green band at the outer edge carrying red and black palmettes, and 3 narrow guard stripes of scrolling vine in gold and pale blue. The 4 corners are cleanly resolved, with the green corner panels of the inner frame turning without the drawing breaking, which is the first place careless weaving gives itself away.

Color Palette and Wool

The ground is a deep saturated black that photographs almost blue-black under showroom light, and it makes every other color in the rug look brighter than it is. Against it sit cream and butter-gold rosettes, muted brick red blossoms, soft apricot and terracotta leaf tips, and pale celadon and silver-grey secondary shapes that keep the field from turning into a hard contrast pattern. The main border is a warm buttermilk ivory with a light gold cast, spotted with small red, black and grey-blue flower heads. The sage green outer band is the quiet surprise of the rug, a dusty eucalyptus tone that softens the transition from the black field to a light floor. The wool takes the dye unevenly in the best way, with subtle tonal movement across the ivory border visible in the raking-light photographs, which is a mark of hand-spun yarn rather than machine-consistent fiber.

Peshawar Weaving and Ziegler Quality

Peshawar in northwestern Pakistan is the center of the Chobi trade, where weavers work to a classic Ziegler cartoon, the 19th century workshop drawing style that favors large-scale open florals over dense court detail. Chobi work is prized for its soft, high-luster highland wool and for drawing that stays legible at room scale, which is exactly what a 10' x 14' floor needs. The back photograph shows an even, tightly packed knot field with straight rows and no pulling at the selvedge, and the handle is firm without being board-stiff. As an Oriental rug in the traditional sense, it is fully hand-knotted, single-piece and built on a cotton foundation that will hold its shape for decades of use.
