Black grounds are rare in hand-knotted work because the field has to be woven in a single deep, even shade across the whole 9' x 12' surface, and any unevenness shows immediately. This one holds its color from selvage to selvage, and the ivory, apricot and sage drawing floats on top of it with real separation. The pile is fine wool with a soft, slightly lustrous handle, knotted on a cotton foundation and finished with hand-tied ivory fringe at both ends. It has never been on a floor, and every rug we ship carries our certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted piece.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion. The field is built instead from a lattice of curling vines that carries large fan-shaped palmettes, rounded lotus blossoms, small diamond rosettes and serrated acanthus leaves, repeating in mirrored pairs up the length of the rug so the drawing reads correctly from either end. Pieces drawn this way sit comfortably under furniture, which is the practical argument for all-over floral rugs in a room where a sofa or a dining table covers part of the surface. The main border is wide and ivory, filled with alternating rosettes and split leaves punctuated by small black palmette buds, flanked by narrow guard stripes and closed with a solid black outer band that frames the whole composition. Corners resolve cleanly, a good sign of a drawn cartoon followed properly rather than improvised at the ends.

Black, Ivory, Apricot and Sage

The field is a true black with a faint charcoal cast where the light catches the pile, and it does the work of a dark hardwood floor: everything laid on it gains contrast. The blossoms move through a warm range, from pale cream at the palmette centers out through soft apricot and peach to a deeper amber on the outer petals, with muted sage green used sparingly on leaves and on a few flower hearts to cool the palette down. The border shifts to ivory and light sand, so the frame lifts away from the field instead of competing with it, and the black accents scattered through that border tie the two zones together. Against grey stone, pale oak or a white wall this reads graphic and dressy rather than busy, and it will sit just as easily with modern furniture as with traditional pieces.

Peshawar Weaving and the Ziegler Tradition

Chobi Ziegler rugs are woven around Peshawar in northern Pakistan, where workshops have spent decades refining the softly colored, large-scale floral style that decorators now ask for by name. Chobi means wood, a reference to the plant and vegetable dye recipes these weavers favor, which is why the apricots and sages here look settled rather than sharp. The weave is even and the knots on the reverse are clearly defined, with a pile clipped low enough to keep the palmette outlines crisp while keeping the fine wool dense underfoot.
