This 12' x 15'4" Chobi Peshawar is a quiet, room-filling piece: an ivory ground, an unbroken all-over Ziegler drawing, and a palette of camel, olive-gold and soft rust that never raises its voice. It is hand-knotted on a cotton foundation with a 5/16" wool pile, brand new and never used, with the weave still crisp and the fringe untouched. Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The field is a true all-over floral design, built on a loose lattice of thin vine tracery that wanders across the whole 12' x 15'4" surface and repeats on a generous scale. Anchoring the lattice are broad fan-shaped palmettes, 8 petal rosettes with small square centers, and long serrated leaves drawn like oak foliage, with tiny 4 petal blossoms filling the spaces between. Because the repeat is so large, the drawing reads as individual flowers rather than as a busy pattern, which is exactly why this layout works under furniture. The main border carries an alternating run of cream palmettes and leaning leaves on a tortilla brown ground, framed on each side by narrow guard stripes of rosettes and stems; the corners are resolved cleanly rather than cut off mid-motif, a good sign of a drawn cartoon rather than a rushed one.

Ivory, Camel and Tortilla Brown

The ground is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than to white, with a gentle abrash that shifts a shade lighter and darker in horizontal bands as the wool changes. Against it the motifs are worked in tortilla brown, camel, olive-gold, a smoky taupe-grey and small touches of soft rust and blush terracotta, most visible in the palmette centers and in a few of the larger leaves. The border reads as the darkest element in the rug, a tawny brown that gives the field an edge without introducing a hard color. Total contrast is low by design, so the rug behaves like a warm neutral floor: it will sit against white walls, oak floors, linen upholstery and both brass and blackened metal without fighting any of them. The close-up photographs show the color best, since the tonal shifts flatten out in a full overhead shot.

Peshawar Weaving and the Ziegler Tradition

Peshawar, in northwest Pakistan, is where much of the world's finest Chobi and Ziegler weaving is done today, and the workshops there have made this soft-palette revival of 19th century Ziegler patterns their specialty. The wool is spun for a matte, slightly chalky finish rather than a high sheen, then knotted on a cotton foundation and clipped to a 5/16" pile, short enough to keep the drawing legible across a piece this wide. Handled in person the rug is heavy and supple, with straight edges, a flat lie and even knotting corner to corner, which is what you want in a piece 184" long where any looseness would show up as a wave. As an Oriental rug it is contemporary work in an old idiom: made to be walked on for decades, and still unused.
