12' x 14'6" Chobi Peshawar Rug | Brown Ziegler All Over Floral | Oversize, Never Used

A brand new, never used Chobi Peshawar in a true room-filling format, this 12' x 14'6" piece is hand-knotted in wool with a 5/16" pile and finished with ivory fringe and flat, straight selvages. It belongs to the small group of oversize Oriental rugs that actually work in a great room without being cut down or pieced: 144" across the width and 174" down the length, wide enough to run under a full seating group with margin to spare. The drawing is the Ziegler layout, an all over floral repeat on a deep chocolate brown ground inside a broad butter gold border. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity stating origin, materials, size and construction, and this is the kind of Oriental rug that reads antique in a room while being fresh off the loom.

Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic Ziegler all over repeat: large open palmettes and 8 petal rosettes strung on a thin scrolling vine that travels corner to corner without a central medallion. Between the big blossoms sit smaller cruciform flowers, curled sickle leaves and serrated acanthus sprays, with the vine drawn thin enough that the brown ground stays the dominant element rather than the pattern. Because the layout is a repeat, the rug reads the same from every side of the room, which matters at this size. The border system is a 3 part arrangement: a wide main band of alternating cartouche palmettes and 6 point stars, a narrow reciprocal inner guard, and a plain brown outer band that frames the whole thing and lets the gold sit forward. The corners are resolved cleanly, with the main band motif turning rather than being cut, a sign the weaver followed a properly worked out cartoon.

Color: Chocolate Brown Field, Butter Gold Borders

The ground is a deep chocolate brown that shifts toward aubergine and warm charcoal as the light moves across the pile, an abrash that comes from hand-spun yarn rather than uniform machine spinning. Against it the floral drawing is worked in ivory and soft butter gold, with the largest palmettes shaded from cream at the center out to gold at the tips. Sage and olive green pick out the leaves, and small rust and oxblood dots sit at the heart of each blossom, tiny but enough to keep the palette from going flat. The border reads as a warm honey gold with pale ivory highlights where the wool takes the light, cooling toward wheat and sand in the guard stripes. It is a genuinely quiet, earth toned color story: brown, ivory, gold, green and rust, and it sits comfortably with walnut, leather and warm white walls without fighting anything.

Woven in Peshawar, Pakistan

Chobi rugs are woven in and around Peshawar in northwest Pakistan, home to some of the best contemporary hand-knotted work being produced anywhere today. Weavers there took the 19th century Ziegler pattern book, a design vocabulary created for Western interiors with open fields and large scale florals, and married it to hand-spun wool and soft, muted dyeing. The result is a rug that looks decades older than it is. The close photographs show what you are paying for: a consistent, level pile, a tight and even weave visible from the back, crisp motif outlines even in the small border figures, and a heavy handle that comes from good wool and honest knot count rather than thick pile. At 12' x 14'6" a single loom and a single team had to hold that consistency across more than 20,000 square inches of weaving, which is the real test in an oversize piece.
