9' x 12' Ziegler Chobi Peshawar Rug | Light Green & Gold All Over Floral | New, Never Used

This Ziegler Chobi was hand-knotted in Peshawar at a true room size of 9' x 12', wide enough to sit a full sofa group on all 4 legs and still leave a margin of bare floor on every side. The wool is hand-spun and the finished rug has been washed to a low-sheen, slightly faded surface, so the drawing stays quiet: a continuous floral vine in sand, gold and pale green with no central medallion competing for attention. It is new and never used, with full even pile, straight sides and clean hand-tied fringes, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity. Among 9x12 rugs, this is the neutral that disappears under furniture instead of fighting it.

Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic Ziegler lattice: long curving vines that arc from one side of the field to the other and enclose large palmettes, split leaves, 8 petal rosettes and small budding sprays. Because the pattern repeats without a medallion, it reads as a true all over design, which is why a rug this size can be cut off at the edges by a sofa or a dining table without losing its composition. The main border runs a row of shield-shaped cartouches alternating with serrated leaf and palmette groups, and it is framed on both sides by narrow guard stripes of tiny linked rosettes. The drawing is loose and hand-drawn rather than mechanically precise, with slight variation from one repeat to the next, which is exactly the character collectors look for in Chobi work.

Light Green, Gold and Beige

The field is a warm sand beige with a distinct light green cast that shifts as you walk around it, moving toward soft celadon in daylight and toward pale khaki under lamps. The border lifts to a clear honey gold, a full shade warmer than the field, and that contrast is what gives the rug its frame. Motifs are outlined in walnut brown and a faded terracotta rose, with cream and buttery gold used inside the palmettes and small blush pink accents scattered through the vine work. Gentle abrash, the natural banding that comes from hand-spun wool taking dye at slightly different rates, runs horizontally across the field and keeps the large expanse from looking flat. There is no black and no strong blue anywhere in the palette, so the rug sits easily with oak, walnut, linen, brass and warm white walls.

Peshawar is the center of the Chobi and Ziegler trade, and the workshops there have spent decades refining this one idea: hand-spun wool, soft natural dyes and the open floral drawing first commissioned by the Ziegler company in the late 19th century. This piece shows the marks of a good workshop rather than a rushed one, with a firm cotton foundation, tight straight selvages, even knotting across the full 12 foot length and a pile clipped low enough to show every outline cleanly, as the folded-back corner photograph makes plain. As a hand-knotted Oriental rug it is built to be used daily and to soften further with traffic, which is the point of the antique-style wash it has already been given.
