8'10" x 12' Chobi Peshawar Oriental Rug | Ziegler All Over Floral | Light Green & Gold | Brand New
This is a brand new, never used Chobi Peshawar in the Ziegler manner, hand-knotted in handspun wool on a cotton foundation and measuring 8'10" x 12'. The field is a quiet light green, the wide main border a warm gold, and the whole surface has the softly faded, already lived-in look that collectors want from a Chobi. The pile is clipped low and even, so the drawing stays crisp and the rug sits flat under furniture. At this footprint it falls into the 9x12 Oriental rugs group that most dining rooms and larger seating areas are built around. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted, along with its size, materials and origin.
Design and Motifs
There is no medallion here. Instead the weaver filled the field with a true all over floral design: large open lotus palmettes and 8 petal rosettes set on a lattice of thin scrolling vines, with smaller blossoms, split leaves and curling cloudband forms filling the gaps between them. Several of the palmettes are outlined in a thin rust line, which is the only sharp accent in the entire rug and does a lot of work in keeping the pattern readable. The main border carries alternating acanthus leaf sprays and small shield shaped cartouches, each one centered on a rust outlined cup, separated by two narrow guard stripes of running stylized leaves. The outer edge is finished in a slim sage band that frames the gold, and the 4 corners are resolved cleanly without the pattern crowding or breaking. Ivory fringe runs across both ends.
A Palette of Light Green, Gold and Soft Rust
The field is a pale, slightly grey light green, the kind of tone that reads almost sage in daylight and cools toward a soft celadon under lamps. Across it the florals move through honey gold, wheat, buttercream and ivory, with a few blossoms shaded in muted mauve and soft brown so the repeat never looks mechanical. The border steps up to a deeper old gold with pale green leaf detail, and the thin rust outlines on the palmettes and cartouches give the only warm punctuation. Look closely at the field in the detail photos and you will see gentle abrash, a natural lightening and deepening of the green from one band of knots to the next, which is exactly what happens when handspun wool takes dye in small lots. Among green Oriental rugs this is one of the easiest to live with, because nothing in the palette is saturated enough to fight with upholstery, wood tones or stone floors.
Woven in Peshawar, Pakistan
Peshawar in northern Pakistan is one of the few places still producing hand-knotted work of this calibre at scale, and the Chobi line is its best known product: muted, wood toned dye palettes worked over the 19th century Ziegler drawing that European firms once commissioned in the Sultanabad district. This Oriental rug shows the workshop discipline you want to see: a tightly packed, perfectly regular knot grid on the reverse, straight selvedges, an even low clip and borders that keep their width from end to end across all 12 feet. The handspun wool has a dry, slightly lustrous handle that will only improve with foot traffic, and the cotton foundation keeps a rug this size stable and lying flat. It is a new piece in perfect condition, with full pile and no wear anywhere.
