This is a new, never used Ziegler Chobi measuring 8'10" x 11'2", hand-knotted in Peshawar from hand-spun natural wool on a cotton foundation. The field is a quiet sage teal that shifts gently across the width, filled edge to edge with gold and ivory palmettes, and it is framed by a broad ivory gold border carried between narrow pale blue guard stripes. The pile is low, dense and evenly clipped, the selvedges are tight, and the back reads clean and regular, which is what you want to see in a well made room size Oriental rug. Design and Motifs

The drawing follows the classic Ziegler formula, an all over floral pattern with no central medallion, so the eye travels across the whole 8'10" x 11'2" surface rather than stopping in the middle. Rows of large 8 petal rosettes and open palmettes alternate with smaller star flowers and split leaves, all of them linked by a loose vine that curves rather than repeats mechanically. Because the design has no focal point, furniture can sit anywhere on it without cutting off a medallion. The main border runs a repeating turtle palmette and scrolling leaf, with 4 corners resolved cleanly rather than truncated, and two narrow minor bands carry a small rosette and leaf meander that finishes the composition neatly at the fringe.

The Teal Green and Gold Color Palette

The field is a soft teal green, closer to sage and seafoam than to a saturated blue green, with visible horizontal abrash where the hand-spun yarn takes the dye at slightly different strengths. That striation is the signature of hand-spun wool and natural dyes, not a flaw. Against it, the floral work is drawn in warm gold, honey and pale apricot, with the lightest blossoms reading almost ivory where the wool has been sheared thin. The wide border reverses the scheme, putting gold and cream in the ground with the vine and palmettes shaded in the same muted teal, and thin pale blue guard stripes tie the two zones together. The overall tone is bleached and sun softened, which is why this palette sits so easily with grey floors, white walls, driftwood and linen upholstery.

Peshawar Weaving and Ziegler Chobi Quality

Peshawar in northern Pakistan has become the main center for Ziegler Chobi weaving, a revival of the late 19th century Sultanabad workshop style that was produced for the European market. Chobi means wood, a reference to the plant and vegetable dyes that give these rugs their muted, faded look from the first day. The weavers use hand-spun highland wool, which is greasier and more lustrous than machine-spun yarn and takes natural dye unevenly in exactly the way collectors like, then wash the finished rug to open the color. The knotting here is firm and consistent, the rug lies dead flat, and the wool has the dry, resilient handle that wears well under real traffic in a room of this size.
