14' x 16'1" Ziegler Chobi Peshawar Rug | Light Green & Gold All Over Floral | Hand-Knotted Wool
At 14' x 16'1" this Ziegler Chobi Peshawar is a true room-swallowing floor piece, hand-knotted by hand in natural handspun wool on a cotton foundation with no machine step anywhere in its making. The field is a soft, slightly grayed light green and the wide main border is a warm antique gold, and because the drawing is an all over floral repeat rather than one large central medallion, the rug reads calm and open at this scale instead of loud. It is brand new, has never been laid on a floor, and the pile still carries its full height, which you can see in the rolled edge photograph. It ships with a certificate of authenticity, and buyers shopping this footprint should be looking in the oversized rugs range rather than a standard 12x15.
Design and Motifs
The field carries a generous all over floral repeat built from broad palmettes, open rosettes, serrated acanthus leaves and long curling vine scrolls that travel corner to corner without ever knotting up. Scale is the whole point here: individual palmettes measure a hand span across, the spacing between them is deliberately wide, and the negative green ground does as much work as the motifs themselves. Several rosettes and lotus heads are outlined in a thin clear red, a single accent line that snaps the softer golds and taupes into focus, and one gold and green rosette near the center is drawn with 8 petals cupped inside a red contour. The main border runs a repeating palmette and leaf cartouche flanked by two narrow guard stripes, and the outermost guard turns green so the border is framed on both sides. The 4 corners resolve cleanly, with the border pattern turning rather than being cut off, which is a sign the design was mapped out properly before weaving began.
A Palette of Celadon Green, Honey Gold and Soft Brown
The ground is a muted celadon to sage, cooler than olive and with no blue push, and it carries fine vertical abrash striations from the handspun yarn that keep a field this big alive under changing light. Over it the drawing moves through honey gold, wheat, camel, ivory and a mushroom taupe that occasionally warms into dusty rose on the larger palmettes, with quiet olive and cocoa brown in the leaf work. The main border shifts to a deeper apricot gold, the guard stripes lighten to cream, and the outer guard drops back to the same green as the field so the whole thing closes on itself. Accents of true red appear only in outlines, never as filled shapes. The overall effect is warm and low contrast, which is why soft green rugs in this palette sit so easily with oak floors, cream plaster walls, brass and natural linen. The fringe is ivory and hand tied on both ends.
Peshawar Weaving and the Ziegler Chobi Tradition
Chobi Peshawar rugs are woven in and around Peshawar in northern Pakistan, where the looms are wide enough to take a piece over 14 feet across in a single run and the weavers work in the Ziegler manner: open large scale floral drawing, restrained palettes, handspun wool and plant-based dyes, a style originally developed by a 19th century trading house for European and American houses with big rooms. Chobi means wood, a reference to the natural dyestuffs behind these soft golds and greens. The wool is springy local highland fleece, spun by hand so the yarn thickness varies slightly and the dye takes unevenly, which is exactly what produces the gentle striation across the field. The back, shown folded in the photographs, is even and flat with clearly legible knot rows and a clean selvedge. As an Oriental rug of this footprint and weight, it is heavy, dense and built to be walked on for decades.
