9' x 11'8" Chobi Peshawar Rug | Sage Green Ziegler All Over Floral | New, Never Used
Hand-knotted in Peshawar from hand spun, naturally dyed wool, this Chobi Ziegler reads as a quiet, light-filled floor: a soft sage green field, beige and gold flowering vines drawn across it, and a deep grey brown border that frames the whole thing without crowding it. The pile is low and dense, the handle supple, and the tones are soft straight off the loom rather than bleached into an imitation of age. It is brand new and never used, and at 9 by 12 proportions it is one of the easier 9x12 Oriental rugs to place, because nothing in the palette argues with furniture that is already in the room. It ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted weave, the natural wool pile and the origin.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion here. Instead the weaver filled the field with a balanced all over floral design: 8 petal rosettes anchored on a thin vertical stem, broad serrated leaves turning back on themselves, small 4 petal blossoms, and a scrolling vine that links one bloom to the next so the eye keeps moving. The drawing is deliberately open, with real breathing space between motifs, which is what keeps a rug this size from feeling busy. The main border carries large beige palmettes and lotus heads alternating with flowering branches across the dark ground, and it is held between two narrow beige guard stripes patterned with little rosettes and leaf sprigs. A plain sage green outer edge and ivory hand-tied fringe finish all 4 sides, and the border corners resolve cleanly, which is a fair test of how carefully the pattern was set up on the loom.
A Sage Green, Beige and Grey Brown Palette
The field is a muted sage green that leans olive in warm light and cools toward grey under daylight, and it carries a gentle vertical abrash, the natural striation you get from hand spun yarn dyed in small lots. Against it the florals run through warm beige, wheat gold and pale ivory, with grey and faint brown outlines giving each flower its shape rather than a hard black line. The border is the one firm note: a deep grey brown, almost charcoal in the close-up photographs, which pushes the beige palmettes forward and makes the green field look lighter than it is in isolation. Soft green tones reappear inside the border leaves, so the two halves of the rug stay tied together. Buyers who are working a room around quiet green and sage Oriental rugs will find this one unusually forgiving next to oak, walnut, linen and warm white walls.
Peshawar Weaving and Chobi Quality
Chobi means wood, a reference to the plant and root dyes these weavers use, and Peshawar is where the Ziegler idiom, a 19th century workshop style revived for modern interiors, is now woven best. The wool is hand spun rather than machine spun, so it takes dye unevenly on purpose and holds a soft sheen as it is walked on; the pile sits on a cotton foundation, and the back shown in the folded and reverse photographs is even and tightly packed with no loose or pulled knots. Knot count on good Chobi work is moderate by design, because the pattern is drawn in generous curves that do not need a fine weave to read correctly, and the trade-off is a heavy, hard-wearing rug that handles a busy household. If you are still weighing where this sits in the wider market, our guide to what separates a Oriental rug from other hand-knotted categories is worth reading before you buy.
