13'10" x 19'7" Ziegler Chobi Peshawar Rug | Sage Green All-Over Floral | Organic Wool, Never Used

This is a true palace-size piece, 13'10" x 19'7" of hand-knotted organic wool woven in the Ziegler Chobi manner in Peshawar, Pakistan. The wool is hand-spun and coloured with natural vegetable dyes, which is why the sage green ground shifts gently from panel to panel rather than sitting flat, and why the gold border has that soft, already-mellowed glow. It has never been on a floor: the pile stands full, the fringes are clean and the selvedges are tight. Rugs at this scale are hard to find in a quiet neutral palette, and it belongs in the small group of oversize Oriental rugs that can fill a great room without dominating it. Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic Ziegler all-over design: large open palmettes set on a slow, wandering vine, with big serrated acanthus leaves curling between them and small rosettes filling the gaps. There is no medallion, which is exactly what you want at 14x20, because the pattern reads evenly no matter where the sofas and tables land. The drawing is deliberately generous and slightly informal, with motifs scaled up so they still register from standing height across 19'7" of length. A wide gold main border runs 4 sides, filled with alternating flower heads and leaf sprays, framed inside and out by narrow guard stripes and finished with a plain olive-brown outer band. Tiny brick red accents, no bigger than a fingernail, are scattered through the field and border and give the whole neutral composition its pulse.

A Sage Green and Gold Palette

The ground is a muted sage green with a warm grey-olive undertone, the kind of colour that looks greener in daylight and browner under lamps. Against it the palmettes and vines are drawn in cream, pale straw and honey gold, with a few motifs shaded in a soft celadon that is lighter than the field itself. The border moves to a fuller camel gold, and the outer band drops back to a deep olive brown that anchors the edges. Abrash, the natural striation that comes from hand-spun wool and small dye lots, runs horizontally through the field and is a mark of natural dyeing rather than a flaw. There is no harsh contrast anywhere in the rug: the reading is beige, gold, green and brown, with the small red flecks as the only saturated note.

Woven in Peshawar, Pakistan

Peshawar in northwest Pakistan is the centre of Chobi and Ziegler weaving, and it is where much of today's finest hand-knotted work in this style is done. Chobi means wood, a reference to the plant and wood-based dyes used here instead of chrome colours. The weavers use hand-carded, hand-spun highland wool on a cotton foundation, and the back of this rug shows straight, even knot rows with no pulling or waisting across a full 13'10" width, which is a real test on a loom this wide. The pile is clipped to a medium height that keeps the drawing crisp while leaving plenty of wool underfoot.
