This is a brand new, never used Chobi Peshawar piece, hand-knotted one knot at a time in natural hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation. What sells it is the ground: a soft taupe and light brown field that reads almost like undyed fleece in daylight, then warms toward camel under lamplight, with an ivory main border drawn in apricot, gold, sage green and burgundy. It is a true Oriental rug in the Ziegler manner, built to sit quietly under furniture instead of fighting it, and the pile is full and even from selvage to selvage with no wear anywhere. Every rug leaves us with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is handmade and hand-knotted.

Design and Motifs

The field is a classic all-over floral design rather than a formal medallion layout: a thin green trellis vine runs diagonally across the whole field and drops large split palmettes, broad lotus heads and fan-shaped serrated blossoms at each junction, with small 6 petal rosettes, tiny buds and curled leaves filling the space between. At the center sits one slightly larger rosette, burgundy at the heart with cream and sage petals, and the same motif is repeated at each end above the border as a standing palmette spray. The drawing has the relaxed, slightly hand-drawn quality that distinguishes a workshop Ziegler from a machine-perfect pattern: no two palmettes are outlined identically, and the burgundy contour lines wander a hair from one repeat to the next. The wide ivory border carries scrolling acanthus leaves and paired arabesques around rosette cartouches, held between narrow gold and green guard stripes of small florets, and the corners are resolved cleanly on all 4 sides.

Taupe, Gold and Burgundy: The Color Story

The base is a light brown taupe with a faint gray cast, an abrash-free but living color that shifts subtly with the direction of the pile, so the field looks warmer in one direction and cooler in the other. Set against it, the palmettes are worked in apricot, amber and soft pumpkin gold, each leaf outlined in a dark burgundy that gives the motifs their edge and stops the whole thing from going flat. Sage and olive greens carry the vines and leaves, while small touches of lavender gray, celadon and cream appear inside the flower centers, and a deep wine burgundy repeats in the little 6 point stars and bud clusters. The border shifts up to a pale ivory cream, with the gold acanthus scrolls and green leaf work reading a shade lighter than the field, which frames the rug clearly without hard contrast. Peshawar Weaving and Quality

Chobi rugs are woven in and around Peshawar in northwest Pakistan, on vertical looms in small workshops where the weavers still hand-spin their own wool and dye it in small batches. Chobi takes its name from the word for wood, a nod to the warm brown and honey tones the natural dyes produce, and the finished rugs are washed to soften the palette into the muted range you see here. The back, visible in the folded corner, shows regular rows of knots on a cotton warp and weft, tight enough to hold the fine outlining in the border yet built with enough body to lie flat and take furniture without crushing. Hand-spun wool takes dye unevenly by nature, which is exactly why the color has depth, and the same wool is high in lanolin, so the pile keeps a quiet sheen and resists soil.
