5'4" x 6'9" Chobi Peshawar Ziegler Rug | Soft Coral & Gold All Over Floral | Natural Wool, Never Used

This piece is a brand new, never used Chobi Peshawar in the Ziegler style, hand-knotted in natural wool on a cotton foundation and measuring 5'4" x 6'9". The drawing is quiet and the contrast is deliberately low: soft coral in the field, a wide beige border, and gold, sage and olive accents that read as a single mellow tone from across the room. That restraint is what makes it an easy Oriental rug to live with, since it sits under furniture of almost any wood tone without fighting it. The wool has the slightly glossy, dry handle of a well washed new rug, the pile is even edge to edge, and the ivory cotton fringe is still full and untouched. It ships with our certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

The field carries an all over floral design rather than a central medallion, built on a thin vine that curls through the whole field and links large gold sunburst palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, broad serrated leaves and small hooked buds. Two shield shaped cartouches sit on the long axis, one near the top and one near the bottom of the field, each filled with a tiny bouquet and outlined in deep brown and rust, and smaller versions of the same shield appear as half motifs where the pattern meets the border. The main border is a lattice of connected diamonds with a palmette or rosette set in each compartment, framed on both sides by narrow coral guard stripes and finished with a rust outer band of little paired leaves. Because the layout repeats rather than centers, the rug can be turned or shifted under a coffee table without losing its balance.

A Palette of Soft Coral, Gold and Sage Green

The field is a soft coral, closer to a washed terracotta than a true red, and it moves subtly across the width with fine vertical striations of abrash where one batch of hand-spun wool gives way to the next. Against that ground the flowers are drawn in warm gold, butter cream and ivory, with sage and olive green reserved for the leaves and the shield fillings, and thin dark brown outlines holding each motif in place. The wide border steps up into pale beige and sand, which lifts the whole rug and keeps the coral from reading heavy, while the rust outer band repeats the field color and closes the frame. Close up the pile shows flecks of pink, apricot and pale green inside single rosettes, so the rug stays interesting at floor level even though it reads as one quiet warm neutral from a standing distance.

Woven in Peshawar in the Chobi Ziegler Tradition

Peshawar in northwest Pakistan is one of the strongest hand-knotting centers working today, and the Chobi Ziegler genre made there is a deliberate revival of the late 19th century Sultanabad commissions: spacious floral drawing, soft vegetal coloring and a thick, honest wool pile. Chobi refers to the wood based dye tradition behind these muted tones, and the softly faded look here is woven in rather than stripped out of the rug. The weavers use hand-spun wool, which is what gives the field its irregular luster and its slight variation in tone, and the knotting is firm and regular with straight selvages and flat lying corners. It is a village grade weave by design, not a city workshop fineness, and that is the point: a rug of this construction is built to be walked on for decades, which is why Chobi Peshawar pieces sit among the most practical hand-knotted Oriental rugs on the market.
