This 9'1" x 11'6" Ziegler Chobi is the kind of piece that changes the temperature of a room the moment it goes down. The field is a clear, slightly mottled aqua blue, drawn over with a continuous ivory and gold floral lattice, and the whole thing is framed by a wide ivory border that reads almost like old parchment. It is hand-knotted in natural hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, brand new and never used, with the full pile height still intact and the fringe untouched. Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. Instead the weavers ran an all-over floral design across the full field, built from large curling serrated leaves in ivory and gold that interlock to form a soft diamond lattice. Inside each compartment sits an 8 petal rosette, alternating between a flat salmon and brown bloom and a rounder gold and ivory rosette with a pale blue center, with small 4 petal flowerheads scattered in the spaces between. Look at the close-up photographs and you can see the drawing is deliberately generous and slightly relaxed rather than mathematically tight, which is exactly what the Ziegler style is prized for. The main border carries a repeating ogival arch filled with vases, tulip buds and apricot blossoms outlined in soft blue, flanked by gold minor bands and a crisp ivory and blue zigzag guard stripe. The outermost plain aqua blue band and the matching blue selvage close the composition cleanly on all 4 sides.

The Aqua Blue, Ivory and Gold Palette

The field is a soft aqua blue, somewhere between sky and shallow sea water, and because the wool is hand-spun and dyed in small lots it shifts very gently in tone from one area to the next, giving the surface a watercolor depth you never get from machine-dyed yarn. Over that ground the lattice is worked in warm gold and butter tones, with undyed ivory used for the leaf highlights so the pattern stays legible from across the room. The rosettes bring in pale salmon, apricot and a muted light brown, and those same warm tones reappear in the ivory border, where the vase motifs are picked out in gold, brown and a dusty blue that echoes the field. Nothing in the palette is saturated or loud, which is why this piece works with oak and walnut floors, white and greige walls, brass, linen and leather in equal measure. Peshawar Weaving and Quality

Made in Pakistan, in the Peshawar weaving belt that has become the home of the Ziegler Chobi style. Chobi refers to the wood-based natural dyes these workshops favor, and the wool is hand-spun rather than mill-spun, which is what gives the pile its slightly uneven, light-catching sheen and its ability to soften rather than flatten with use. The back photographs show an even, well-packed knot with straight rows and no pulling or distortion, and the edges are hand-finished with the selvage wrapped in blue wool while the ends are secured and left as a short natural fringe. At 9'1" x 11'6" the piece is big enough to be woven on a wide loom by a team working from a single drawing, and the pattern holds its registration from end to end, which is the real test on a rug this size.
