8'11" x 9'1" Square Chobi Ziegler Rug | Peach & Copper All Over Floral | Natural Wool, Never Used
True squares are hard to find, and a genuine hand-knotted one at 8'11" x 9'1" is harder still. This Chobi Ziegler was woven in Peshawar on a cotton foundation with a clipped natural wool pile, and it reads as an old piece even though it has never been walked on: soft peach and copper across the field, a wide golden beige border, and the gentle tonal drift that comes from small dye lots rather than from age or wear. The back is even and legible, the selvedges are tight, and the hand-knotted fringe is original to the weave rather than sewn on. Every rug ships with a certificate of authenticity. Placed under a round or square dining table, or centered in a sitting room where a rectangle would fight the walls, it solves a problem most inventories cannot answer. Please Note About the Photographs:
The first overhead photograph was shot under cooler light and renders the field browner and more mauve than it is in person. The angled studio photographs and the close-up detail shots show the true colour: a warm peach and copper field against a golden beige border. Nothing about the field tone is fading, staining or wear.
Design and Motifs
The field carries an all over floral design in the Sultanabad manner: broad open palmettes, 8 petal rosettes and split leaves strung on a loose vine that repeats without ever locking into a grid. There is no central medallion, which is exactly why a square works here. The drawing is deliberately large in scale and slightly softened at the edges, so the pattern never crowds the field and furniture legs can sit anywhere on it without cutting through a focal motif. The main border runs a continuous vine of lotus palmettes and serrated leaves, framed on both sides by narrow guard stripes of small connected rosettes, with 4 corners resolved cleanly rather than truncated mid-motif. Close inspection of the pile shows sage green and rust picked out inside the flower heads, small quiet accents that only surface when you stand over the rug. It is a traditional drawing rendered at a calm, low-contrast volume, which is what makes a Chobi Ziegler sit comfortably in a contemporary room as easily as a classical one.
A Warm Peach and Copper Palette
The field sits between warm peach and light copper, with terracotta and apricot passages moving through it as the light changes across the square. Against that ground the motifs are drawn in golden beige and pale wheat, outlined in a deeper rust that gives the flowers their shape without ever reading as high contrast. The wide main border shifts to a clearer golden beige, almost honey in the detail photographs, which lifts the whole perimeter and makes the rug look larger than its footprint. Scattered inside the palmettes are muted sage green and soft grey-green notes plus small ivory highlights, the only cool tones in an otherwise entirely warm palette. Where the wool takes dye unevenly there are faint horizontal bands of lighter and darker peach, the natural abrash of small hand-dyed batches, and it is one of the most attractive things about the piece. Practically, this palette lives easily with cream and oatmeal upholstery, walnut and white oak floors, brass, and warm whites on the wall, and it hides everyday traffic far better than a dark or a pale ivory ground.
Chobi Weaving in Peshawar, Pakistan
Peshawar, in northwest Pakistan, is the centre of the Chobi trade. Chobi means wood, a reference to the plant and root dyes the weavers work with, and the design vocabulary is drawn from the Ziegler Sultanabad workshop rugs of the late 19th century, which were woven for Western drawing rooms and remain the most copied commercial design in the trade for good reason. This example is woven in the standard Peshawar manner: a Persian knot on a cotton warp and weft, a densely packed weave, and a pile sheared low so the drawing stays crisp. The reverse shows clean, regular knot rows and no slack or bunching, and the weight in the hand is substantial for a rug of this scale. As an Oriental rug rather than a Persian one, it offers the same hand-knotted construction and the same lifespan at a friendlier price, and because it is brand new it has its full pile still ahead of it.
