At 11'11" x 15'2" this Chobi Ziegler covers a room rather than decorating one corner of it, which is exactly what buyers searching oversize 12x15 hand-knotted rugs are usually after: one piece under a full seating group, or under a 10 seat dining table with chairs pulled back and still on wool. It is hand-knotted knot by knot in handspun, naturally dyed wool on a cotton foundation, with a soft golden ivory ground and a quiet palette of rust, sage and old gold. The pile is thick and clipped evenly, the sides and ends are finished by hand, and it has never been placed in a home. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity, and this one is still in exactly the condition it left the loom in.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The drawing is a true all-over floral design, built from a lattice of thin curling vines that carry large spiky palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, split leaves and small tulip buds across the whole field. The palmettes alternate in scale and color as the pattern steps across the rug, so the eye never lands on a repeat, and the open ivory ground between them gives the pattern room to breathe. That openness is the point of the Ziegler style: big motifs, generous spacing, nothing crowded. The main border runs a soft mauve ground set with blocky cartouche devices and small rosettes, framed on both sides by ochre gold guard stripes of running flowerheads, and the inner border of hooked leaves and blossoms sits directly against the field. The corners are drawn properly rather than chopped, and the fringe is the natural cotton warp left as an unbleached tassel.

Colors: Golden Ivory, Sage Green and Rust

The field is ivory warmed toward honey and wheat, with gentle horizontal abrash from the handspun yarn that makes the ground move in daylight instead of sitting flat. Against it, the strongest accent is rust, a soft brick terracotta used for the sunburst palmettes and for the fine outlines of the vinework. Sage green appears in the leaves and in the hearts of several larger blossoms, cooled here and there by a muted teal and by charcoal outlining that keeps the shapes crisp. Old gold and ochre fill the secondary flowerheads, and a dusty mauve carries the main border, giving the outer frame a shade more weight than the field without introducing a hard color. There is no black, no bright white and no saturated navy anywhere in the rug, which is why a piece this large reads calm rather than loud. It will sit comfortably with oak, walnut, cream plaster, linen upholstery and warm brass.

Origin: Chobi Ziegler Weaving in Peshawar, Pakistan

This is an honest Made in Pakistan piece, woven in and around Peshawar, the workshop center where the Chobi tradition is at its strongest. Chobi means wood, a reference to the plant and root dyes used for the yarn, and the wool is handspun before dyeing so the color takes unevenly by design, which is where that soft abrash comes from. The Ziegler layout itself is named for the 19th century trading house that commissioned large scale, open floral rugs specifically for Western drawing rooms, and Peshawar weavers have been reinterpreting that vocabulary for decades on upright looms with cotton warps. The back, visible in the fold photograph, shows a clean regular knot with the pattern reading sharply from the reverse, a reliable sign of even tension across a loom this wide. As an Oriental rug at oversize scale, it took months on the loom, and the finishing wash has already given the pile the low sheen it will keep.
