This 9' x 12' Chobi Ziegler is the quiet kind of large room rug that designers keep coming back to: a warm brown field, ivory palmettes drawn at generous scale, and not one loud color anywhere in it. It is hand-knotted in the Peshawar workshops of Pakistan with natural wool pile on a cotton foundation, and the surface has the soft, slightly variegated glow that only comes from wool dyed in small lots. The rug is brand new, has never been on a floor, and ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug. At the 9 x 12 size it holds a full seating group with wool, not hardwood, under the front legs of every piece of furniture.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The field carries an all-over floral design of broad ivory palmettes set on a lattice of curling vines, with serrated leaves, small 8 petal rosettes and budding stems filling the ground between them. The drawing is deliberately loose and large in scale, the way antique Ziegler style patterns were composed for big Western rooms, so the pattern reads as texture from standing height and as detailed botany when you look down at it. The main border repeats the same palmette on a lighter ground, flanked by guard stripes of linked rosettes and a narrow reciprocal chain at the outer edge, and the corners are resolved cleanly rather than cut off. Detail shots show how the weavers outlined each blossom in a darker tan so the ivory forms hold their shape against the brown ground.

A Neutral Brown and Ivory Color Story

The palette is entirely earth toned. The field moves between camel, wheat and a deeper coffee brown, with gentle horizontal abrash banding visible across the open areas where the dye lots shifted, a marker of small batch dyeing and hand knotting rather than a flaw. Every motif is worked in ivory, cream and soft gold, with tan and light taupe used for outlining and shading so the flowers appear to sit slightly above the ground. The border ground lightens to a sandy beige, and the fringe and selvedge are natural ivory. There is no red, no blue and no black anywhere in the rug, which is exactly why it works over oak and walnut floors and beside linen, leather, grey plaster and warm white walls without competing with anything already in the room.

Peshawar Weaving and the Chobi Tradition

Peshawar, in northwest Pakistan, has become one of the most respected centers for hand-knotted room size rugs in this style, with weaving families working looms that turn out 9 x 12 and larger pieces in antique inspired drawing. Chobi takes its name from the word for wood, a reference to the plant and wood based dyeing tradition these workshops are known for and to the soft, faded, almost sun-mellowed palette that tradition produces. The back of this rug, visible in the folded corner photograph, shows even, well packed knotting with the pattern reading clearly on the reverse, and the pile is clipped low so the drawing stays crisp. Weight, wool quality and an honest hand-tied fringe on cotton warps put this well above the machine made and power loomed pieces sold at the same footprint.
