9' x 12' Pakistani Oriental Rug | Slate Gray All Over Floral Zigler Design | Brand New, Never Used
This is a full room-size piece, 9' x 12', hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and finished with ivory fringe at both ends. The field is an unusual soft slate gray that carries a quiet green cast, and it is covered edge to edge with a balanced floral repeat drawn in ivory, wheat gold, salmon and midnight navy. There is no medallion; the whole surface works as one continuous pattern, which is why a rug like this settles so easily into a furnished room instead of fighting it. The pile is thick, evenly clipped and completely unwalked, and the drawing runs clean and symmetrical from one end to the other. As one of the more useful sizes we stock, it sits comfortably alongside our other 9x12 area rugs, and if you are still weighing what separates a city-woven Oriental rug from its neighbours, that guide is worth reading first. Every rug we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The flat overhead photograph reads deeper and greener than the rest of the set because of the lighting used for that shot. The daylight floor photographs and the close-up details are the accurate reference: in a normal room the field is a soft slate gray with a gentle green undertone, and the border is a warm wheat gold rather than a strong yellow.
Design and Motifs
The field is a true all over floral design, built on a lattice of thin curving vines that never quite repeat in an obvious way. Large ivory and gold palmettes sit on the centre axis, flanked by pairs of navy-hearted lotus blossoms that open like fans. Between them run 8 petal rosettes, small five-petal blossoms in salmon, serrated split leaves, and tight cloud-band scrolls that fill the gaps without crowding them. The main border is the strongest statement in the rug: a wheat gold ground carrying a procession of boteh paisleys, each one outlined in navy and filled with a miniature garden of leaves and rosettes, linked by a leafy arabesque vine. That band is framed on both sides by a narrow salmon guard stripe with a repeating scroll, then a fine ivory minor stripe of alternating blossoms, and the whole thing is closed by a plain gray outer band that echoes the field. The corners resolve properly, which is the tell of a drawn cartoon followed carefully rather than improvised at the last knot.
A Slate Gray Field With Gold and Salmon
Gray is the reason to buy this rug. The ground is a muted slate that shifts with the light, reading cooler and more silver in daylight and warmer, closer to a sage or moss gray, under lamplight in the evening. Against it, the ornament is deliberately low contrast: wheat gold and ivory carry the large motifs, soft salmon and peach carry the smaller blossoms and the guard stripes, and muted sage green appears in the leaves. Midnight navy does all the outlining work, and it is what keeps the pattern legible instead of letting it dissolve into the ground. Traces of blue-gray show up inside the boteh and in the smaller flower heads, tying the border back to the field. There is no bright red anywhere in the rug, and nothing shouts, which is why this palette works in rooms where a classic red and navy scheme would be too heavy. Buyers who have narrowed the search to gray and charcoal area rugs will find very few handmade pieces this size in a gray this soft.
Made in Pakistan: The Zigler Tradition and the Weave
Pakistan is now one of the few places still producing hand-knotted goods of this calibre in volume, and the best workshops there build their reputation on exactly this kind of work: classical drawing, good wool, and a knot count high enough to hold a curved line. The Zigler name refers to a design language developed in the late 19th century for Western interiors, softened palettes and flowing floral repeats rather than tribal geometry, and this piece belongs to the finer, more densely drawn end of that family. You can see the quality in the close-ups: the vines stay thin and continuous through their curves, the navy outlines are a single knot wide in places, and the palmette interiors carry three or four separate shades without muddying. The wool takes the dye cleanly and has an obvious sheen where the pile catches light, and the rolled edge shows a dense, well-packed pile with a firm handle. The cotton foundation is straight and true, the selvedges are tight, and the fringes are original to the weave, not applied. New and never walked on, this is a rug at the start of its working life.
