12' x 15'4" Zigler Chobi Rug | Charcoal Gray All Over Floral | Handspun Natural Wool, Never Used

This is a true room-filling piece, hand-knotted in Pakistan from handspun natural wool and drawn in the quiet, low-contrast Zigler Chobi manner that suits a large open floor better than almost anything else. The field is a deep charcoal gray with a soft aubergine cast, covered corner to corner in gold and pale teal flowerheads, and it is framed by a generous ivory border that holds the whole 12' x 15'4" surface together. The rug is new, never used, with a full even pile, straight sides and a flat lie, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity. At this scale it belongs in the oversize rugs group, where floor coverage rather than furniture layout is the deciding factor.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The drawing is a repeating lattice of large rosettes and lobed palmettes, each one linked to the next by curling serrated leaves and thin vine stems, so the eye keeps moving across the field instead of stopping in the center. Between the flowerheads sit small boteh, or paisley forms, some outlined in teal and some filled in gold, which break up the repeat and keep it from reading mechanical. This type of all over rug design is the practical choice in a 12 by 15 foot space, since sofas and a dining table can sit anywhere on it without covering the best part of the pattern. The wide ivory main border repeats the same vocabulary at larger scale, with paisley scrolls and rosette clusters, and it is fenced on both sides by narrow teal guard stripes filled with a running geometric meander. A soft brown outer band and ivory fringe finish the ends.

Charcoal Gray, Gold and Teal in the Wool

The palette is the reason this rug works in a modern interior. The ground is charcoal gray with a warm aubergine undertone, and because the yarn is handspun it varies slightly from row to row, giving the field a soft striated depth rather than a flat block of color. Against that dark ground the flowerheads read in antique gold, wheat and pale butter yellow, with a muted teal, closer to aged aqua than to a bright blue, used for outlines, leaf centers and the guard stripes. The border is a warm sand ivory that lightens toward oatmeal at the edges, with gold palmettes and dusty rose-brown shading inside the corner medallions. Nothing in the rug is saturated or loud, and the overall effect is gray and gold with just enough cool teal to keep it from turning beige. Weaving Quality and Pakistani Workshop Origin

The Zigler Chobi style takes its name and its drawing from the 19th century Ziegler workshop commissions, and today it is woven mainly in the Peshawar region of northern Pakistan, which has become one of the most reliable sources of good contemporary hand-knotted work anywhere. Chobi means the wool is colored with natural, plant-based dyes, which is why the tones settle rather than shout and why they will mellow further instead of going off-key. The wool is handspun and takes a deep luster, the pile is cut at a medium height, and the back shown in the photographs is even and legible, with a clean cotton foundation and firmly overcast selvages that will keep a rug this size square underfoot for decades.
